Dogs Vs Coins my 2 cents

Well everyone has an opinion and it may well be that way that major dealers get preferential treatment with their submissions....of course that is not what i have experienced

In reply to Moondoggys journal regarding the similarity of dog judging and coin grading i have to say i have not experienced what he is talking about.

I dont consider myself a "big player" in the coin business, i have prob only submitted to NGC roughly 3 times under my own name this year, and then only a handful of coins each submission.

Now for those who have read some of my previous journals you will know i have submitted raw coins and actually received a grade! and basically what i thought it would be...and more amazingly what grade it was advertised for sale for!

Now for the other side of the story, recently at the ANA show in LA i submitted roughly 15 slabbed coins to NGC & PCGS, now these coins were not submitted under my name but under the name of a friend who is a "big player" in the coin business....this "BP" has written books and is the number one name in his chosen area of Numismatics for the past 20+ years and btw actually has good friends that are graders at the respective company's

Now you would think someone who has friends grading the coins, has been in the game and is highly respected for more then 20+ years etc etc etc would get what Moondoggy describes as preferential treatment...well thats not what i experienced....

Take a guess out of the 15 coins that i submitted for cross over...yes just cross over, out of the 15 coins not one single coins came back crossed over to the other service....no PCGS coins were graded by NGC and slabbed and no NGC coins were graded by PCGS....out of 15 coins and having a "big player" as the submitter not a single one crossed over.

Now before you say that the coins were obviously junk etc etc, these are coins that we both had selected out of a large group to cross over for various reasons and we both believed a number of the coins would cross over

So to Moondoggy if your now seeking out one of these big players to submit your coins then i would suggest maybe just saving your money and doing it yourself, i had more luck submitting raw coins to NGC then the big player did just wanting to cross over at the same grade.

Anyway thats my 2 cents and of course take it with a grain of salt thats just what i have experienced so thought i would share it after reading moondoggys journal....oh and btw i did think like moondoggy before this...thinking that hey it cant hurt having a prominent name on the submission....as the grading company's say...the grading process is anonymous...whether you want to believe that or not its up to you and for some of the rarer coins it would be damn hard to remain anonymous but anyway i had my little break for the day and its back to work

The picture below is the latest acquisition for the Cherokee County Collection...i believe its the rarest Charlotte coin variety in existence with only 2 known! The large diameter variety is known by the wider collar used, rumor has it the collars were used from the years before by mistake, with only 2 known examples this coin is 4 times rarer then the famous 1849-c open wreath gold dollar
