how I turned a raw 1st spouse coin into pennies
Once upon a time I bought two Dolley Madison 1st spouse coins the day they went on sale from the mint, one unc, one proof. With great hopes I sent them off to NGC for grading hoping for a matched set of 70's but was disapointed only the Proof coin got a 70, the unc coin came back a 69. Now we will fast forward to a couple of weeks ago. As I was searching the auction sites as I'm apt to do (probably to much). I was looking for deals on modern commems when what do I see but a lonely Dolley Madison UNC coin that was closing very soon with a very low bid of $356.05 I was feeling sorry for the guy, going to get robbed, maybe because he listed it in the wrong catagory or just because no one really cared about this coin and needing one myself to still get my matched pair (but not at the top of my want list.) I helped the guy out and put in a $500 bid to shorten this up a bit I won the coin for $422.00 about $50 bucks under melt. Now Im thinking quick profit or hold for grading. What to do? A couple of weeks later I head for my buddies coin shop to maybe sell the gold for a quick profit. When walking in the door he greats me with look what I have and shows me a 1914d Lincoln VF 30 in a PCGS holder. He then tells me what a deal he will give me if I want it and of course I do needless to say I traded the gold for the copper and even got some money back too. Now I'm thinking the old 1914d in my whitman book the one with the scratch on it, is now extra so I sold it. It had fine details wrapped around the scratch and bought a 1900 NGC MS64rd IHP(old fat Holder) with the rest of the money. Now both those coins the 14d and 1900 IHP reside in my registry sets. That my friend is how I changed a half oz. of gold in to copper.
