It's a coin with a Photographic Pedigree

The term "plate" refers to the fact that the coin was photographed and used as an example in a coin publication. For example: Redbook Plate, Breen Plate etc. Simply refers to the fact that the particular coin was the best example the author could find to illustrate their description. MPD is Miss Placed Date.
