The $200 Treasure Hunt

This is a story about the everyday treasure hunt of collecting.

I was looking through a dealer?s inventory of raw $2.5 Gold Coins. There were about 45 coins in the blue box. They were of all grades and both liberty head and Indian head. They were all common dates nothing too special. This box of coins appealed to me because of the relative affordability of most of the coins (all were under $700). I picked up a few and put them in a pile expecting to buy one from that pile. I had pulled out a bunch of 1929 Indian head quarter Eagles and was left with two coins to decide from. One was an AU-50 with a price of $220 and the other was an MS-60 with a price of $320. The AU-50 had what I thought was a much shaper strike so the decision was simple ill save $100 bucks and get what looks like a better coin. I went home with my purchase and it found its place in my type set replacing an EF 1913 Quarter Eagle I had. I did not think of the coin again until it came time to send in my submissions to NGC for the month.

I said what the heck and sent my bargain quarter eagle in for grading. After waiting only four days I was very happy to find out it had graded MS-61! This made me smile from ear to ear. Not only had my small investment almost doubled in value it had shown my eye for coins is improving.

This little event has started me on a hunt for raw quarter eagles and I hope it turns up some more treasures.

Happy collecting!
