Another different then usual choice for my collection but another coin i just couldnt pass up after seeing her...she may look familiar to a few people.....

My other new baby i picked up this week is actually a lady....a Washlady to be exact. This lovely pattern quarter was struck in 1879 and although not received well at the time it is now considered one of the most popular and coveted pattern designs in any metal! This coin was the large single page pictured coin in the Heritage auction catalog...on the reverse of the front cover is a lovely hi res image of this coin!...i actually didnt notice until i had already purchased it...then i noticed i purchased 2 other coins that were pictured on the reverse cover lol...maybe i can start a signature set of Heritage auction catalog cover plate coins lol

It is thought that the original "Washlady" name was given by David Proskey in the April 1891 New York Coin and Stamp Company catalog of the F.W. Doughty Collection. Dave Bowers writes in the ninth edition of the Judd reference: "Assistant engraver Charles E. Barber's suite of silver patterns of the dime, quarter dollar, half dollar, and dollar denominations stands today as among his finest work. In the late 19th century, this depiction of Liberty was dubbed the 'Washlady' design, a rather unfortunate designation, as the woman depicted is elegantly coiffed, and certainly not styled as a laundress might have been."

This "Elegant Lady" is awash in a sea of a mulitude of colors, just a beautiful example and although not a condition census piece in regards to grade she must be very close to to the condition census in regards to eye appeal! This piece is actually struck in copper and is one of only 12-15 pieces struck...whether all those peiece still exist im not sure but ill add a journal after i finish my investigations!

have a great weekend all
