I Saw a Great Hoard the Other Day

My supervisor brought his raw collection in...

Greetings!!

It has occured to me lately that I really just love to be around coins...hell, I even just love to watch coins on TV.

I got into a discussion with my supervisor at work a few days ago about coins and collecting when he stated he had a lot of older coins at home. "You know, Morgans, old nickels..." he said.

So, I told him I'd have to show him what a great job NGC does in preserving the coins I have, and I brought a few of my coins in for a little show and tell. I brought in a Peace Dollar, bragging that "this is the type of coin Harvey Dent used in The Dark Knight" I brought in a Proof SAE and a MS state SAE for comparison purposes.

Everyone at work seemed to love it. My supervisor said "hey I'll bring some of mine in too, maybe you can tell me a few things about them." I was excited to do so.

He brought in quite a hoard the next day. Some really immaculate Morgans...including one with an O mint mark...I think an 1885. Some great Barber half dollars, and some walking Liberty quarters. I was just mesmerized by his hoard.

I really don't get to be around older coins, as I collect the SAE's primarily, but to be around the coins his dad left him...and in reallllllllllllly pristine condition, too. I was amazed!!

I rushed home and printed him off some of the prices from Numis Media I have privy to as a paid member here. And I also brought him my coin grading book the ANA publishes to help him understand what a valuable set of coins he has. I have been obsessed with his collection...especially since he said to me "OH, I have a lot more than this..."

I am trying to talk him into membership here so he can preserve the coins and compete here in the registry.

Just being around those coins made me have one of the best weeks of my life. I also understood more fully just how much this hobby means to me and what a void it has filled in my life.

It was also a grand thing to broaden someone elses horizons a little, and see the coins from some elses eyes. It's almost like seeing innocence again as you get this rush that you just have to pass on the the next collector.

I hope every one of you reading this gets to have the same joy of helping someone else be excited about the hobby.

Have a great weekend everyone!!
