Hindsight is always 20/20
A good day of upgrades
Yesterday I was fortunate enough to upgrade 2 Morgan Silver Dollars to much higher quality specimans. It made me think back to the the days when I first caught the collecting bug and simply wanted "A coin in every slot". As a result of that philosophy, I now have 2,3 and sometimes 4 coins of the same mintage and date.
Yet, this is a good thing because I have become so much more selective of the coins I add to my collection. Obviously, quality and eye appeal are the first points of evaluation, but I now also give thought to the providence of a coin. For example, I am privilaged to own several Morgan Dollars from the Jules Reiver collection and although they are of lesser grading than other coins of the same mintage that I own, I will not sell them, simply because of their providence. These coins take on a value above and beyond their intrinsic value, and I think that is what motivates the budding neumatisist.
In any event, it will be a long time before I have the complete Morgan Series, but the journey is most of the fun.
