The Hoarding of Buffaloes

Uncertain times bring people into the numismatic herd...

Greetings!!

So, I read in my local paper the other day that the Mint is out of stock of the 24k Buffalo coins. The article went on to talk about how people turn to metals as investments in uncertain economic times.

This is certainly not a bad idea at all for investors who want to have the security of precious metals in their chosen portfolio. But, in my humblest opinion, if one is a COLLECTOR, it is a horrible decision to start to hoard coins just with the idea of profit in mind. As a collector, it is bad to buy anything with the idea of a hopefully "rising value" in the future of any given collectible.

Collecting is a vicarious allocation of any persons time and money. And I would be dis-honest if I wrote here that collectors only true aim is to obtain something a collector loves, solely for the sake of having a "loveable" item. We collectors like to see the item gain monetary value as well.

And that is why we all get thrilled when our submitted coin comes back a PF or MS 70. We know right away that this is a truly unique coin, and we know the value already is well above what we paid for this coin. BUT if we as collectors send the same type of coin in, and it comes back a 65, or 69...the soul of a collector is almost always certainly happy with that coin as well. We are just glad to be that much closer to completing our set, which for many of us is the jewel of our collecting lives, and where the disgusted looks from our husbands/wives/life partners originate as the time and money to acquire our collection is sometimes a sacrafice to the relationships we all have.

So, I welcome anybody who loves to collect coins into the numismatic herd. I would only give the advice to check your reasons for collecting these great coins, or any item, in the first place.

Have a great week everyone!!
