Some Very Personal Thoughts on Collecting.
Also, some great news!!
Greetings!
So, Just like everybody else I have been monitering the ups and ups of the Reverse of 2007 Error coin, and I will be the first to admit that when I read about the Error right here in the Collectors Society, I literally RAN up to my coin collection to see if I did indeed have that Error.
Turns out I do not.
I was a bit disappointed when I found out I "only had the 2008 Silver Eagle" and then the reality set in about what I was really feeling about my collection since that day.
I feel like I was a bit pig-headed and greedy for a day or 2 and I lost focus on why I REALLY do collect the Silver Eagles to start with. It's NOT the idea that the Mint will make a "mistake" and I would benefit from a "mistake". ( I use quotations because I really do not think these are literal mistakes, I think it is a well thought out way to stir new interest and boost sales for a particular coin)
I collect the Silver Eagles because I love the look and feel of them, and adding the coins to the registry is a true delight and a way to break away from my rather mundane life. I collect the newer coins in "raw" form in hopes that when I send them to NGC for proper grading and conservation, that a regular old Proof or "W" will come back a coveted MS or PF UC 70. Not for any monetary gain as I will nevwer ever again sell any item I collect. I have been through that before and my regret level is STILL as high as the day I sold away the very achievements I worked so hard for.
My coin collection runs deep as I would rarely admit this to anyone, but I collect so that when I am gone, my children will have something worth covetting from their "old man".
OTHER than the good looks I gave them through my genes, and the good manners and attitude for life, that is!!
So, I don't really care about ever getting that Error. But I would not have complained either had I recieved one in raw form, either. But, I truly do get ashamed when my attitude for collecting gets off track and I start to look at the monetary side only....that's what STOCKS are for, in my opinion!!
In other news, I have won a bid on a CGC Batman Year One Part One Comic by Frank Miller that I will be posting in my CGC registry when it arrives. And as many of you have read in the past, I have been regretting selling off some baseball cards with autographs about 15 years ago. I have now won bids on some similar autographed baseball cards, and the pain is relieved just a little now!!
Here's hoping for a great second chance at my collecting goals!!
Good luck to you all!
