I'd never heard of Artificial Toning before
Learn something new every day, I guess.
A couple of weeks ago, I had sent in a 1951 Washington-Carver Half Dollar as an Early Bird Cross-Over. It was encapsulated in a PCI holder with a grade of MS66. I doubted very seriously that it was really an MS66, and didn't pay anywhere NEAR that level of price. However, I was hoping that it might cross over to NGC at MS65, and I could still realize a hefty return should I decide to sell the coin. The coin was very heavily toned, but you could still see a good bit of detail, so I was confident, but as an insurance policy, I asked NGC to contact me if it wouldn't grade at MS65, but they thought that NCS might be able to help.
Well, they did contact me, and told me that the coin had been Artificially Toned. I didn't realize that there was such a thing, but if there is, then what was the person that did it trying to hide? I guess that I'm going to find out, because I went ahead and paid for NCS to conserve it. I will let you all know how that turns out. Until then, Happy Collecting, everyone.
