Hi Guys, Nobody can come up with a percentage or round figure, for the 1883 Hawaii 25 Cent, with the "recut" date. I have heard a lot of "theories" on this item, and would like to hear more, if anone would like to comment on it.

I have heard a lot of "theories" on this item, and would like to here more, if anyone would like to comment on it. I kind of hesitate to comment on it, but I have to. After discussing this with Don Medcalf, who is to me, the the "Guru" of Hawaiian money, here is what I come up with:

Don examined all 5 of the dies that struck these coins, and even with heavy magnification, none showed any high spots, or extra material. The "recut" is located in lower "hubs" of the "O's" in the first "8" in the date (see photo). I feel that one of the dies had extra "flash" material on it, and the flaw either went un-noticed until after a certain number were struck, or the extra material wore it's way out, after a certain ammount of strikes. At any rate, no more than 20 percent of the total ammount of minted pieces exist in this condition, less than 100,000. (500,000 minted, 257,000 redeemed). These pieces usually demand a premium over the rest, but maybe they are a lot scarcer than we think. I have noticed that these pieces in Gem condition are very sharp, some semi-proof like, some even with grease from the die. I am certain that these "rucut date" quarters are a scarce item, and certainly the first pieces off the die that struck them. See scan of my MS67 quarter, with a magnifying glass. Please don't hesitate to offer any feedback that you have. Lots of Aloha.........T (ukemaniac@hawaii.rr.com)
