One man's trash is another man's hobby.

The Coin Collecting Dilemma

When it comes to collecting there does not seem to be any shortage. Everything has some collect-ability it seems. Yet collectables vary so greatly that we sometimes come to the place where we say: Hum?. what shall I collect. I like stamps, but I don't know just where to begin. For a quite a while I saved stamps, there was no apparent goal in mind, except to save them. I began with stamps on the letters, and when I got a letter with an interesting stamp I just put it into my album, just as it came, I didn't even take it off the envelope. Then I bought first day covers and amassed a good number but still the fun of it all was somehow lacking. I had a small hoard of coins put away and those were just ordinary circulated types with some special coins that were given to me but here again I felt I needed more direction. I have also collected antiques and they became so bulky that I had to ask: Where will I put all these antiques? And....of course the list of collecting can go on and on. But the one area I kept returning to was coin collecting. Coins are collectable, coins are spendable, and coins are an investment. These three areas encouraged me to stay with the hobby and the fun of coin collecting. The variety is so massive that if you get bored in one area you can revert to another for variety and change of collecting and still keep within the same hobby.

The Coin Collecting Decision

As a decision it was easier for me to come to this conclusion. Many of the other collecting hobbies just did not have what this hobby offered. Availability, cost and ease of storage won me over to the decision of coin collecting. It does not have to be expensive to collect coins, and the availability of coins is quite apparent. The more difficult part is, how technical do you want to get as you collect, which will determine how expensive the hobby may become, but that can develop overtime as one becomes more proficient in the hobby. The third area is ease of storage. Perhaps the organization of the hobby is more difficult than the storage aspects. The hobby can be done discretely and with a certain amount of privacy which is a plus for security. All in all the benefits are enjoyable and does not need to get out of control as long as things are kept in proper perspective.

The Coin Collecting Goal

What is the goal of coin collecting? It can be as simple as you want it to be. Pennies, Nickels, Dimes, whatever - your the boss, and no one tells you what to do. You set the goal and develop it as you go along. No need to stress out over it. Don't sweat the small stuff, Its all small stuff. Yet if you want to get serious there is plenty of room to get more techical in the hobby and the cost rises with the expert and professional part of the hobby.

The hobby is fun, exciting, and has a long life for all who enjoy collecting, and the story goes on.... Dawbid
