1787 Serpents Head, New Jersey Copper

While going through a box of old foreign coins I came across something that looked different to me and little did I know that it was an early post colonial issue.

The New Jersey Copper was unfamiliar to me and I did not know what I was looking at. The Serpents Head on the coin looked foreign to me so I thought it was a coin from another country. When I looked on the reverse there was a shield and some other markings. Still I did not know what I had in my hand. Then one day while I was going through my Whitman Red Book I came across the post colonial issues and there it was among the old state issues. The coin had environmental damage as the date was no longer visible and the coin was bent and corroided. I decided to send the coin in to NCS and get the coin checked out and it came back in very fine details but with the above damage noted. Still I was very happy with the find and now I am looking at all the old foreign money I get with a closer eye for something special.
