Asleep At The Switch?

Why did I get back into collecting again? I know there must have been a reason?

I recently decided to start getting my mint sets certified and felt the perfect place to start was with one of my 1964 proof sets. After removing the coins from their original mint cellophane for shipping I was very pleased to see that they looked even better than I had thought. I knew they wouldn?t get the coveted UC designation but felt all five coins had excellent strikes and would grade in the 67-69 range with hopefully a 70 thrown in. Also in comparing this Kennedy 50C to my other set and studying the coin under high magnification I thought it was a definite ?Accented Hair? candidate.

I had paid the extra charge to have the coins imaged because I was impressed with the images from a previous submission (see below) even though I would have like to have seen the grade included (this Morgan is MS 64.)

So when I arrived home yesterday and saw Finalized / Imaged / Shipped, I excitedly checked the grades assigned. When I saw the 5C and 50C had only been graded at PF 64 I was hugely disappointed but resigned myself to the fact that I?m not a professional and must have missed something.

Next I checked my email to see if the images had been sent. There it was, but again another big disappointment when I opened the image of my 1c; NGC had switched from the imaging style shown below to simply scanning the slab and the image was terrible. I get much better results from my own Epson 2480. Needless to say I will not be paying extra for imaging again.

Think things couldn?t get worse? Guess again. I open my next image (the 5Cc PF 64) and there is my 50C slabbed as a 5C. Funny thing is, as bad as the scan is it shows highlights of the ?Accented Hair.? On to the 10C; they got that one in the right slab. Next my 5C slabbed as a 25C and finally my 25C slabbed as a 50C.

Out of a 5 coin submission 3 coins are incorrectly labeled and slabbed. If this can happen it sort of makes me wonder about those PF 64 grades too.

Anyway NGC was already closed for the evening so I went ahead and added the coins and images to my sets; if anyone wants a good chuckle go to my page and scroll down to the 1964-P PR set.

When I get my coins Monday (12 working days on the dot, kudos to NGC) I will scan them myself and replace the current images with ones that I hope will far superior. Then it?s on to contacting NGC regarding how we can correct this little problem.
