MY TWO CENTS WORTH........

Back in 1985 some of my friends that also were coin collectors ask me to get into collecting baseball cards.

I said, baseball cards? Are you crazy. Who wants to collect baseball cards?

I have these beautiful old coins. Back in 1985 there were a lot of new rookie players that are now super star like(Roger Clemens).

So as you can guess I didn`t get into collecting baseball cards.

Well 1989 rolled around and a new baseball company came on the scene called UPPER DECK. This company had a shinny foil package with shinny coat cards and a never before heard of price of ONE DOLLAR.

Everyone said this will never fly no one, only crazy people will pay one dollar for a pack of baseball cards, myself included.

NOW FOR THE REST OF THE STORY.............

As it turns out in that dollar package of baseball card was to be found the #1 card of the set which just happened to be a new kid on the block by the name of Ken Griffey Jr.

So four years later my friends said Mike buy baseball cards this is going to be something big. People were saying modern baseball cards would never go anywhere, old topps and bowman were better etc.

Soooooooo I said ok I will give this new modern baseball card thing a try. I purchased my first pack for a dollar and guess what I found a Ken Griffey Jr card....WOW TOO COOL.

When the first becketts price list came out with the price for the Upper Deck set it had the Ken Griffey Card with a value of one dollar. Ok now thats just one dollar for one card that a just payed one dollar for the whole pack. My investment just went up 10xxxxxx.

So to say I was excited would be an understatement. So I started buying these cards by the the whole box and then by the case.

Before long I was buying other baseball cards and started to pull out the high priced insert cards from the packs. I then would go to the card shows and sell the penny, nickel, and dime insert cards I had pulled out of the packs to the dealers for half of the listed book price.

To my amazement I found people of all ages all walks of life standing in line with cash money to by these modern cards, that everyone said would not sell, including myself. So I sold a fifty dollar listed card for twenty-five dollars,a twenty dollar listed card for ten dollars and a ten dollar listed card for five dollars. My regret is that I didn`t get into baseball cards in 1985.

I put together 100 Ken Griffey Jr cards that cost me ten dollars and sold them when they hit three dollars each for three hundred dollars.

Today a Ken Griffey Jr card certified by PSA MINT GEM-10 is over $200.......But they said no one would pay a dollar for a pack of cards. The UPPER DECK COMPANY is a major player in sports collectiables today,oh and packs sell for more then a dollar.

Check out ebay item#300118153427 to see a recent sale of a Ken Griffey Jr card.

In closing I learned never say never when you think old is better new surprises you, dont get me wrong I like old,if you have any old coins or Mickey Mantel cards you dont want send them to me......But I dont think you will.

If you have any new TOP POP FIRST DAY ISSUE,EDGELESS ERROR COINS

or anything modern that you think is not going nowhere send it to me. But I dont think you will.

So have fun and maybe you will make a dollar or two.

Mike
