First one found, a true "Discovery Coin"!

I have been collecting and trading Mexican Libertads for roughly 5 years, in both gold and silver. Most of my purchases are of a pure "bullion" type of buy, for stacking, and awaiting a day when spot price allows for a great resale price. I loaded up on 2015 coinage, mostly BU Silvers, and, a handful of 2 Ounce Proof and 5 Oz Proof coins.

While looking at the 2 Oz Proofs for any doubled dies, I noticed a "gap" in the left wing area(right as viewed), and, with my loupe saw a mirrored surface where there should have been, and is on my 4 other coins in hand , metal from the base of the wing. Something was "wrong".

I knew this was most likely abrasion of the dies from some kind of die repair work, which, when finished, always leaves the metal smaller, thinner, and, in this case, missing completely.

I went to the set registry to see how many varieties of all Libertads are listed, and saw 1 coin from 1987 as a "Missing Feathers" variety, from Tom McGrady's collection. Since I do not own one of these, it was difficult to know where the exact issue lay, but, I decided to send all 5 of my 2015 2 Oz Silver Proof Libertads in for grading, and, requested a "Missing Feathers" designation.

NGC DID give the coin in question a variety label, but, named it "Detached Wing", which makes more sense of course.

Since only 1,300 of these were struck, I'm sure a few more of these may be sitting in people's collections. Maybe once the word is out, there may be similar 1 Oz, or 5 Oz coins with a "Detached Wing" issue.

My goal is to own ALL known Libertad Varieties, which includes double dies and that missing feather coin. I have seen heavily clashed BU Libertads, but, known so strong to warrant a special label....YET.

For now, this new discovery will stay in the collection. It's too bad NGC does not do a "Discovery Coin" label as a competitor does, that is always fun to own(I have 2 Roosevelt Dimes with John Wexler attributed doubled die obverse, which are labeled as "Discovery Coin")...fun to hunt for, and great to get a label for, these new varieties are out there..check your coins, and Happy Hunting!
