The Strong Future of Coins

It has been over a year since my last Post. The past year really has been a big one for my collection. I was finally able to slowly expand on both of my $2.5 Dollar sets. It has also been great to see the price of both Silver and Gold climb as the majority of my numismatic holdings are still bullion coins. I have worked to transform my collection into a collection of rarities (not that I have any true rarities). I love the designs of the modern bullion coins but at the end of the day classi

Upgraded

Sometimes it is worth it to buy coins raw. As I looked through my collection for some coins to send into NGC for grading I decided to send in some raw gold... I sent in a 1913 Quarter Eagle, A type three $1 dollar, A 1913 Half Eagle and two 1oz Buffalo. After I carefully put each coin into 2x2 flips then wrapped them safe for their trip, I knew I would have to wait to find out how the coins grade. Four of the five coins graded how I expected them to and one really caught me sleeping. I

Quarter Eagle Collecting

The coin for everyone. The quarter eagle is in many ways a great coin for any collector. I only wish I had started to collect them sooner. Both the Liberty Head and the Indian head $2.50 gold coins are beautifully designed. Both coins have many ways to collect them; date sets, short sets and mint mark sets. Both coins have affordable and expensive options for collecting them. I started to buy raw Indian head and liberty head quarter eagles by chance. I was in a coin shop and they had a few

RE: Buy Coins for love, not as an investment

I agree with the title but that is not what Augustus gets at As a young collector I am not happy to hear people think only older generations have the passion for the hobby. I do not think that statement could be further from the truth. If Augustus could see the crowd at my local coin shop he would not have made such a bold statement. The usual scene on a weekend is people of all ages looking for coins to fill holes in their collection. Most of my friends also in their 20s collect either Morgan

My coin for this Month

My first "Star Coin" Each month I try to build my sets by adding one nice piece. I found this Morgan and knew it would fit my collection perfectly. I am usually a fan of blast white silver coins but the tone on this 1886 Morgan caught my eye. It is graded by NGC MS 64* Let me know what you think.

The $200 Treasure Hunt

This is a story about the everyday treasure hunt of collecting. I was looking through a dealer?s inventory of raw $2.5 Gold Coins. There were about 45 coins in the blue box. They were of all grades and both liberty head and Indian head. They were all common dates nothing too special. This box of coins appealed to me because of the relative affordability of most of the coins (all were under $700). I picked up a few and put them in a pile expecting to buy one from that pile. I had pulled out a b

Four Years Later

I have been collecting for Four years, how am i doing? It was after my freshman year in college that I began collecting coins seriously. I had always love to see my father's collection but never had one of my own. Exactly four years has passed since I started my own collection and a lot has changed. I have since graduated from Bentley University and I have a job as a financial analyst. I have expanded by collection extensively to include a near full type set from 1799 to present. I have begu

The Silver Commemorative Comback!

These coins are having a big comeback! Classic silver commemoratives were minted from 1892 to 1954. They have commemorated everything from Columbus discovering the Americas to the Bridgeport, Connecticut centennial. The price ranges are as varied as the topics covered by the coinage. Most falling in the $150 to $900 range. It is clear that the best part of Classic commemoratives is the ?bang for the buck.? Most have distribution under 30,000 and some post numbers as low as 5,000. The 1936

The Ultimate Hoard

With 20 Bank bags full of silver coins I knew we had some work ahead of us. I recently got a phone call from a friend that went like this: ?Hey John, you know something about coins right?? ?Yea, sure do.? I replied. ?Well you are going to go wild! I just found a ton.? He had literally just found a ton of coins. I did not know what to expect. My buddy then described to me how he had moved a dresser in an apartment his family owned and he found a safe full of silver coins. The apartment

THE LAST LADY LIBERTY

A symbol of freedom and hardship... A great era of US coinage was concluded with the stop of production of the Mercury Dime. Since the late 1790s American sculptors and artist have adorned the faces of US coinage with the likeness of Lady Liberty. The 1945 Mercury dime and the 1947 Walking Liberty half dollar were the last pieces of circulating coinage to remind the public of the beauty of freedom. United States coinage has portrayed Liberty in many stages of life, in many types of head wea

RECESSION COLLECTING TIPS AND IDEAS

It is about what you have not what you need when money is tight! Focus on what you have not what you need. Look through your collection for coins that should be sent in to be graded and find coins you think can earn an upgrade. The mint has a lot of great series that are circulating right now. Begin a MS set of presidential dollars or finish up your MS set of state quarters. These coins may not yield the largest financial returns but they will give you a cheap coin fix. Spend time workin

TYPE SET COLLECTING IS THE ONLY WAY TO LEARN

A nice type set does not have to be all high grade! When you first begin it is hard to pick a concentration for collecting. The perfect place to start is a type set. A type set is one example of every coin. The set includes every major issue from half cent to silver dollar and can even include examples of the gold coinage. With a type set you are forced to learn a little about each coin in the set to make an educated purchase. As you complete the set you will have physical example of all US
