Gotta Get Me Some Bars

I need some silver bars now! I keep hoping that Kerry will flex his mental muscle and post a side-by-side image. Okay, onto the real subject. I need to get me some silver bars like Kerry has. Wow! Those ones he's posting are so cool. I NEED one. I guess what I like about them other than the shear mass, is the history. You can see the history in those bars. Each nick and crevasse...one can only imagine. I like the marks too. I gotta get me some too. See: http://coins.www.collect

2010 A Space Odyssey

Arthur C Clarke would be proud we made it. I wonder how many people know that AC actually invented the real AE-35 unit that was (and still is) used for communication between earth and a given satellite. I bet Arthur C Clarke would like to see American Proof Silver Eagles in 2010, don't you? Happy New Year!

My 2009 Lincoln Chronicles Set Arrived Today

Beautiful Packaging - Not shrink wrapped etc so I could see the coins. The coins are in their own capsules. Not clear how to see the obverse of the pennies or the reverse of the dollar. All in all, very pleased. It's a nice set to have in the collection. Still though, I wish NGC or PCGS would have allowed special grading for these sets.

No Special Set Designation

No special NGC "SET" for Lincoln's Bicentennial Set! I was thinking there was a good chance that NGC would support a true "SET" designation for the Lincoln Bicentennial Set and allow owners to send in unopened (government packaging) sets for grading. I emailed NGC and asked if they were planning such an honor for Lincoln. The reply was that they aren't planning to do this. We should send in our coins piecemeal. I believe NGC is missing an opportunity here, and doesn't understand the sig

Lincoln Bicentennial Set

Wow, tough to get a order in! I noticed on the US Mint web site that they have acknowledged that their servers were unprepared for the demand in processing orders. I was there trying to order a set at noon. It took me 2 hours to finally get my order through. I feel fortunate to have gotten a set. I'm wondering whether NGC will have a special set designation for these sets (similar to the 20th Anniversary Eagles). If so I plan to send in my set unopened and cross my fingers for the best.

All grades are MS 66!!

Every coin in each set within my collection appears to have a grade of MS 66. At or around 11:00 PM EDT today all the coins in my sets got a new grade - MS 66! The scores for the coins still reflect the old grades. Anyway, I filed a support request. Later

Broke into the top 10!

I broke into the top 10 in my SMS Presidential Dollar collection today. I'm really enjoying collecting the proof and SMS presidential dollars. I think they are great coins. I know my SMS set will never be a #1 set as I'm only collecting NGC coins. That's okay though, the rankings are a nice bonus and help me get motivated, but in reality I don't care so much about it. I like having a complete set to date much more. I wish we would see more in circulation. I plan to add photos of my

UHR Arrived Safe from NGC + ER Pop Figures

+ Population figures for 2009 UHR ER as of 03/21/2009, See below My baby is back home. I was getting worried as the package shipped registered mail from NGC on 3/12, 8 days ago!! I had some scary thoughts indeed. Not quite sure why it took so long. No mind now, it's here. I have attached a snap of the reverse. I still need to work on my camera skills. After entering my coin in a new registry set "American Eagles 1986-Date, Mint State", I was able to see the population numbers for the

These Economic Times - What should a coin collector do next?

Prediction: The mortgage collapse/gold spike is ending soon The deep recession we're in was caused by a lack of oversight that enabled certain parties to make quick money by selling mortgages to average people that couldn't afford them. The financing rules were structured in such a way as to bypass known patterns that would prevent under qualified borrowers from getting a mortgage that was far outside their means. And to make it worse, these bogus securities were packaged up and passed alon

My '09 UHR Double Eagle arrived at NGC today (5 March, 2009)

My 2009 UHR Double Eagle, through all of this uncertainty, made it! Unbelievable! The Double Eagle is in the hands of NGC now. That's a comforting thought. This whole UHR experience has been a roller coaster - constant ups and downs. I guess during the ups and downs it can seem like the world is against you. But in the end, these are the times that you remember and that bring you the most joy. I'll never forget my anticipation of the 2009 UHR. The first time I saw the UHR coin in perso

2009 UHR Double Eagle Price Recalculated and Back Ordered further...

Geez, I wish I would have ordered my coin the first day! The 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin (UH1) originally went on sale on Jan 22 for $1189.00. In the last few days the mint suspended sales while recalculating the sales price. The mint has stated they may/will do this on a weekly basis. The new price as of Jan 29 is $1239. I wonder whether my original order on Jan 25 for $1189 will stick. The mint told me originally that my coin would ship Feb 06, my latest update is Feb

2009 UHR Double Eagle Ordered

My 2009 UHR Double Eagle is on the way, I can't believe it. I've been watching the '09 UHR coin ever since it was first announced. I have been telling myself, "There is no way you can get that coin, you can't afford it!". Well, times have changed it appears. I did my taxes and I have just enough of a tax return to buy this amazing historical coin. I can't wait to see it. I feel so lucky to be in a position to own one. I think this coin is going to be one of those highly collectible coi

*!*!* Happy New Year 2009 *!*!*

New Years Resolutions... I've spent a good amount of time these holidays looking at peoples sets and reading their journals. It's pretty cool to see what people are doing and what their interests are. I also like seeing the shared experiences and patterns we have. Now that 2009 is upon us, I have been reflecting on 2008 and planning what I'll do for 2009. I'll narrow my focus a bit this year and concentrate on completing the sets I have started. I may try and fill out my buffalo's. I wi

Merry Christmas "To Me" II

Happy updates to SAE PF 70 set on the way Ol' St. Nick was sure nice this year. 2 more coins toward my goal. This set is a tough one. I wonder if I'll ever complete it. 2011 seems like the soonest given what remains. Regardless, it's great to see these latest entries. There's always pride is closing some of the gaps in a set. 1999-P ASE PF70 UC 1997-P ASE PF70 UC Happy Holidays! Cheers! RBG

Coin Collecting Over Time - Pass it On

My collecting emphasis has changed over the years, my appreciation hasn't. Ever since I was a boy I always took the time to look closely at coins. I was intrigued by the different colors and the different dates. That was the sort of thing that caught my eye. I love coins and what they represent. As a young man, I inherited a modest collection of US coins. It was the spark that got me to do my own work and make the collection better. I made good friends with the local bank tellers as a re

My First #1 Registry Set

My First #1 Set - Proof Presidential Dollars Well, I finally got a #1 registry set for proof presidential dollars. I tried to build up the set from my own submissions to NGC, but in the end I had to buy a couple of the '08 coins. Even though I'm only tied for #1 and was the 32nd to achieve a perfect set, I'm still pretty proud. It will be fun to build out this set over the years. Happy Holidays! I hope Santa brings us some great news coins.

Nice to see the 70s, I wonder how the 68s will do over time. Here's how my last submission broke down. I wonder whether all the effort to find the SMS presidential dollars will work out in the long run. I'd sure like to crack the MS-69 barrier on a coin or two. The 68s may end up being some good pieces though. I'm really happy with those. Can't believe I surpassed 150 modern submissions this year - 2008

2008 has been quite a year. I really appreciate being part of the Collectors Society. I often wonder whether my submissions are good money spent given the economic times. Twice now found my passion.

I never would have guessed back in 1990 that others (as well as me) went to their local bank branch/s to get nickle, penny, quarter and dime rolls to hunt for that special coin!! Somehow, I lost the passion back then, but I've found it again. It's a brave new coin world now. Any advice to a new coin age rookie?
