The 2009 Native American Dollar

Check out your local bank! In the general course of my usual week I'll stop by my local bank (Bank of America) and purchase about $10 in dollar coins. They work better in the vending machines at work than paper money, they don't crease, tear or generally get stuck in the changer!!! It's usually fun to see which of the small size dollars show up. I see about 25% Anthony's, 40% Sac's and the remainder are Presidential's. I, of course, look through them for the known varieties and usually find no

A plea to NGC!!!

The Lincoln Cent Part III - The Wide AM gets no respect!!! Well I can't seem to stray to far from talking about Lincoln Cents. I was outbid this weekend on an MS 67 RD 1934. It seems that there are fewer of these 67's to go around these days or the seller wants way above Numismedia... The subject at hand is the Wide AM cents from 1998, 1999 and 2000. It would seem that these varieties are just as popular as any of the Doubled Die varieties of the past 50 years. The 2000 trades frequently on

A great weekend of coin euphoria!

Grades are back and the local coin show was much more than I had expected! Well, it took about 5 more attempts at the order status button to finally receive that all so important - finalized/imaged/shipped. I sent 2 1958 Wheat cents - both came back MS 66 RD ( I had hoped that I might get lucky on a 67) - they were the 2 best from 2 rolls, I think. I also sent 3 modern Memorial Cents 1987, 1992 & 1994 D - all three came back MS 67 RD - too bad as I thought that 2 of these had 68 potential.

Coins are an exciting way of life!

Non-collectors would think we are stupid... I'd like to say that I don't get the same "Submission Fever", henceforth known as SF, but alas I can't say it. My latest submission has been in QC for 2 full days, with today being the 3rd! The suspense is killing me and I've hit the order status button 20 times in the past three days... If we're not careful the CDC (Center for Disease Control) will be contacting NGC about a widespread epidemic of SF and their part in perpetuating a nationwide out

The Lincoln Cent - Part II

BN vs. RB vs. RD - Why all the hype? In recent days, since I've rekindled my passion for the Lincoln Cent, I've been contemplating just how I'll complete the early dates in certified grades. I started out with a fervor in the 34-58 set with a goal to complete in MS 67 RD - with a couple of exceptions - the 55 double die and the 1935 S, as neither fits any budget I would have unless of course I came upon some very large windfall of cash... I believe this to be a somewhat reasonable goal. I a

The Lincoln Cent - Part I

A passion or an absurd obsession? Recently, I've been contemplating just why I like the lowly Lincoln cent? It's certainly not for the artistic beauty that the Golden Age of coinage inspired; such as Walking Liberty Halves, SLQ's, Buffalo Nickels, Mercury dimes, St. Gaudens Gold coins, etc... So just why do I like them and why do so many other collectors like them? My first belief is the enormity of the set and the overall challenge it will be to complete from 1909-2009. This set will be a

Another round of Goals for 2009

Maybe these are simple, but hopefully they'll be achievable. I don't take that much time to journal on a general basis, but perhaps I'm leaving enjoyment on the table by not doing so... My first goal for 2009 is to enjoy the hobby and above all else, no matter what happens to the economy, have fun with collecting! I've only been a member of Collector's Society for about 7 months and I've enjoyed every bit of it - from submissions and the nail biting tension prior to grades being posted, comp

Honest Sellers are more prevalent than you think...

I also have been blessed by honest sellers on Ebay. I will sometimes buy mint sets and proof sets on a whim on Ebay, mostly because of price points. In August, I bought a mint set from an ebay member in Texas. He inadvertenly sent a proof set by mistake. He sent me an email prior to the wrong thing showing up and as a few of you have atested to he just told me to keep the proof set. Needless to say, I didn't feel right about keeping the proof set without paying for it, so I sent him the low

More June Reflections!

I spent too much... June was a good month for my collection, but not so good month for the bank account! Luckily, I've been selling off some of my hoard of raw coins, helping fund my new found certified habit. Here's my June acquisitions - 1922 Peace $ MS 64 1941 D Lincoln MS 67 1943 Lincoln MS 67 1995 DDO Lincoln MS 68 1939 Lincoln MS 67 2005 Lincoln SMS MS 69 2006 Lincoln SMS MS 69 1993 Lincoln PF 70 1994 Lincoln PF 70 1995 Lincoln PF 70 It was a great month full of f

Lincoln Fanatic - 1909 VDB

Not the king, but close in MS 66 RD Bought this from a dealer at a local coin show from what he purported to be an original BU roll. Incidentally, while I was perusing the entire stack of 40 coins, he had already selected 10 coins for submission, another dealer skoffed at the original roll idea and said these coins weren't worth $10 a piece. A very unprofessional thing to do to another dealer, but some small satisfaction knowing he was completely wrong and an id--t as I thought he might be...

The back in case your interested... Here's a picture of the reverse of this coin not worth $10... Can you believe the audacity of that guy? I felt like punching him for the other dealer.

Since we're talking about searching rolls of pennies...

Roll searching is an cheap way to feed an addiction. I too find this relaxing and a stress reducer. Searching pennies can be very rewarding as well, as many varieties are known for recent years - Wide AM's from 1998-2000, doubled dies, etc. This week alone I've found a handful of wheats dating back to 1930 and a 2000 wide AM Lincoln. I won't get rich doing this, but it is a cheap way to stay involved with my favorite past time. At times I branch out into nickels, dimes, quarters and halves (wh

Woohoo! Latest submission grades have been posted!

NGC is the greatest! A couple of weeks ago I posted my first submissions to NGC and my humble opinion of each, to my surprise I've calibrated my eye to be a bit tough! Check out the results on these five Lincoln cents - 1) 1909 VDB - MS 65 RD 2) 1909 VDB - MS 66 RD - This one blows me away!!!! 3)1934 - MS 66 RD 4)1938 - PF 66 RD - Woohoo! 5) 1946 D - MS 66 RD Small things please me! New to the Journal

Another round of grading... My guess is that all of us have gone through the pains of body bagged coins and learned what the technical terms are for altered coins the hard way. I know I have paid for many grades that were not to be in the past few years. Fortunately, I cut my teeth on some other grading services and now I hopefully have a little more discerning eye. Well time will tell, as I've sent my first submission of 5 coins to NGC. I'm a Lincoln fanatic, so all 5 were MS lincolns. H
