Look Mom, A Bright Shiny Object for You

What a coin may inspire As a toddler, or so I am told, I would take my new discoveries to my mother. Being so young everything was new. So I would walk up, object in hand, and say "Wass dat?" She would examine my prize and give me a word. I am told I would do this perhaps a dozen times a day, day after day, endlessly. She never tired or showed any frustration over my constant "Wass dat?" As time passed I would bring gifts to my mother that I thought she might enjoy: a sea shell, a figurine

HERE'S AN IDEA.....A PRIVATE COLUMN

SO WHAT DO YOU THINK? I PROBABLY SHARE THIS CHARACTERISTIC WITH MANY IN THE COLLECTING COMMUNITY: I MAINTAIN DETAILED RECORDS. INVOICES ARE STORED AFTER THEY ARE SCANNED INTO THE COMPUTER. COMPUTER RECORDS ARE BACKED UP PERIODICALLY ON CD AND KEPT IN MY SAFE DEPOSIT BOX. NOW THE ONE THING THAT GETS MY JUICES GOING, ASIDE FROM OWNING A PIECE OF HISTORY, IS EXPERIENCING THE THRILL OF THE DEAL. YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN..... PAYING 60% OF FAIR MARKET VALUE, MAYBE EVEN JUST 50%. KNOWING THAT THIS W

Why is it.........?

PCGS vs NGC grades Being a "poor man" who enjoys the new Presidential Coin series I found myself standing by the sidelines and watching others snap up the gold spouse coins. At $500.00 per a commitment to purchase the entire series would be a $20,000.00 outlay over ten years (assuming gold stands still). I went the frugal way and ordered my spousal, bronze metals from the US Mint. Generally disappointed is how I felt about the quality of the metals. Twice I sent back a metal which I thought

RE: MARINE DOLLAR MORE THAN JUST A MARINE

BEAUTIFUL COIN, UGLY COLLECTOR DEAR PAUL, I TOO AM A FAN OF THE US MARINES. I FULLY APPRECIATE THE PRICE PAID BY THE "GREATEST GENERATION". CERTAINLY ANY AMERICAN GENERATION WOULD RISE UP TO DEFEND THE MAGNIFICENT EXPERIMENT STARTED BY BY ITS FIRST: WASHINGTON, HAMILTON, JEFFERSON, FRANKLIN AND MANY, MANY OTHERS........ SO I WOULD THINK THEY WOULD DEFEND YOUR RIGHT TO BELIEVE AS YOU DO, AND TO VOICE THAT BELIEF. I JUST WONDER, IS THIS THE APPROPRIATE FORUM TO SHARE NON-N

The "Newbie" in me

Quantity vs. Quality The wiser heads around me tell me I am doing "almost" everything the wrong way. Chief among my sins (of which there are many)is gathering all of the low-hanging fruit. For example, I collect the easy, available 1934-1945 Mercury Dimes. Any 1916-1931 coins that are quick-grabs are also in my collection. Absent are the key coins: 1916D, of course, and 1921, 1921D, as well as the 1942/1P & D. I don't even have the semi-key 1926S. Since I am a normal mortal I must li

Wish List (Plan) 2008

Paul Morphy vs. The Duke of Brunswick, 1858 Chess is a war game, the ultimate goal of which is to force the surrender of your opponent. To be successful a player must be goal-directed and purposeful: short and long term strategic goals achieved by tactical play. All of this is held together by a "plan". I have only recently discovered how random, and plan-less my coin collecting activity was. I would buy coins of mixed grades and as opportunities arose. If a coin appealed to me from a dealer'

I want it, I want it, I want it List.

Prizes to take home. I want world peace, more money than Bill Gates and an understanding girl friend. I want: 1916D Mercury Dime MS65FB 1921D Mercury Dime MS65FB 1921 Mercury Dime MS65FB 1945 Mercury Dime MS65FB 1945S Mercury Dime MS67FB micro S, et al My first three wants are priceless but my Mercuries would cost me just under $75000.00. Dreamers want it all but collecters get to hold their prizes in their hands and take them home. Any "Want L

THANK YOU D.M. !!!

An Annual Wish List: A Marvelous Idea, By Jove! A well developed plan, boldly executed, is the key to a winning chess game. Could my other hobby inform me in my numismatic pursuits? I think it may..... Today's journal entry by D.M Merrill struck me like a thunder bolt. While he was grading his collecting efforts in the journal I took away the idea of his yardstick: the "15 Most Wanted List". What would it take to create a proper annual wish list? Certainly I must first take a more determ

REGISTRY RISK

THRILL OF COMPETITION VS THE PASSION OF THE HUNT I RECENTLY CAUGHT MYSELF IN A EVIL THOUGHT: I CONSIDERED BUYING A COIN FOR THE SAKE OF ADVANCING IN THE REGISTRY COMPETITION. FOR THE BRIEFEST OF MOMENTS, I DREAMED A WICKED 1000+ POINTS ADVANCE. THEN THE MOMENT PASSED. THE COIN WAS A WINGED LIBERTY (MERCURY, FOR YOU HEATHENS) DIME NGC GRADED MS-67FB. I REJOICED IN FINDING IT, SUCH A STEEP GRADE,AND IMAGINED MYSELF APPROACHING THE TOP 25. BUT THE STRIKE WAS WEAK IN SEVERAL POINTS OF THE OB

STAR

IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER I AM REALLY A SUCKER FOR ORIGINAL SURFACES, NEEDLE-SHARP STRIKE, EXCELLENT LUSTER AND AN ABSENCE OF POST-PRODUCTION MARKS......BUT THEN AGAIN, WHO ISN'T? EYE APPEAL IS SO SUBJECTIVE THAT I CANNOT PUT AN EXACT DEFINITION ON IT. NOW I BOUGHT MY FIRST "STAR" COIN TODAY: 1941S MERCURY DIME, NGC GRADED MS 67*FB. AFTER EXAMINING IT I CAN NOW SAY THAT OUTSTANDING EYE APPEAL IN A COIN SHOULD TRIGGER A REACTION IN THE EYE( AND MIND) OF THE BEHOLDER. WHEN I HOLD THIS CO
