Colonials

I really like the old Colonial Coins, I have a Washington Small Military Bust Colonial Piece which I am... considering sending it in to NGC Conservation to get it checked out and put in a holder. I know that it will get a details grade as most Colonial types that I have come across all have some environmental damage, yet for me it seem better to have them conserved and put in a holder than to leave them to possibily getting more damage somehow. The one I have is 1783 Small Bust Washington Port

New Submission

Waiting for 5 I just sent in 5 raw coins to NCS as they are older and may need a bit of preservation. The coins are an odd group but ones I wanted to send in for my own collection. I sent a 1801 Drapped Bust Cent, a 1910 Lincoln Cent, a 1846 Braided Hair Cent, and 2 Buffalo Nickels 1915 and 1916. I expect some of these will only get a details grade but they are well worth preserving and encapsulating for my benefit. I will let you know what the outcome is when I get them back. Dave To see ol

Silver Eagle

Not What I Expected I recently sent in a Silver Eagle from another grading company and it was graded MS70. I wanted to get into an NGC slab so I could list it in my registry of coins, so I sent it off to NCS as it had some discoloration and I wanted it conserved. They in turn sent it to NGC for grading and I was greatly hoping for the same grade as was previously given to the coin. Yet when I got it back, though it was conserved and look great, it only had a MS69 grade. I am disappointed that

What A RollerCoaster

Is The Sky Falling? With all this up and down in the precious metals, we only can wonder what an effect this will have on the coins we collect. The US Mint is raising their prices to keep up with gold and silver as it escalates. The modern coinage will be effected as precious metals will push up the costs to manufacture the coinage. If there were any good answers to the economy someone would have come up with a solution but no one seems to know just where it will all end. And....there seems to

Gold & Silver Is Climbing

Up and Up It Goes What really does it all mean? To look at the gold and silver going up is an uneasy feeling. On the one hand it offers to some coin collectors a chance to cash in and make a few dollars but it also seems to reflect the instability of our economy and that may not be so good. Some commentators are saying it is not to be trusted and others glory in all the rise in precious metals, personally I find it is a little unsettling. I think it is a time to be cautious, things could go in

Morgans

Carson City I just added two Carson City Morgans. The date are 1883cc and 1884cc one of them is in the GSA Holder certified by NGC at MS65 and the other is 1884cc certified by PCGS. These were to good to pass by and I have them in my registry. I already have the 1882cc in PL with NGC. I hope to find some others soon. Best to all.

1912 Olympic Bronze

Stockholm Sweden Olympic Bronze medal NGC came through at last and here is the final product. This has been a long wait but one I am very please to have. This medal was acquired by me through a purchase of old coins mostly foreign and at the time I had no idea what I held in my hand. There were only 19 bronze medals awarded to American athletes and this is probably one of them. Wow! It would be nice to know who won it and what the event was but I have no idea how to get that information.

Beyond Frustration

Invoice date Jan 23/09 I think now I am beyond frustration. I have had my coins setting in NCS from Jan 23 and after checking almost everyday it is a bit much. I wonder has anyone else had to wait this long? I just hope and pray that the wait is going to be worth the result. I guess, I don't expect miracles, but right about now one would be welcome, so I can get on with my collecting. Well, perhaps the good Lord is trying to teach me patience? This month will be a long one if nothing happens s

Oh Dear What Can The Matter Be

NCS Must Be Busy My coin submission to NCS is dated 1/23/09 and they are still in the evaluation stage. Oh dear what can the matter be. I suppose you have all been through this, waiting and waiting and no change on the submission page report. The one item I am most concerned about is an Olymoic Bronze Medal 1912 Stockholm, Sweden. It is a beauty and vary rare I would say; perhaps that is the hold up as I am sure they do not see these everyday. I must admitt I have high hope for the outcome but

Good Find

An Olympic Oldie I have just sent in an Olympic bronze medal and it is an oldie and a goodie as well. I found it in a box of foreign coin I had purchased and at first did not realize its importance. The medal is from the fourth Olympiad in Stockholm Sweden and is dated 1912. I have sent it in to NCS for verification etc. and hope to hear from them soon. It is a bronze and though there are copies and various other commemorative types of the Stockholm Olympics this does not appear to be one of t

Its the end of the month and nothing yet.

Good to see some of you guys are getting your coins. It seems like it has been a long wait this time, as it is now the end of the month and still nothing. The coins I sent in just seem to setting there in the vault or wherever they keep them. I realize that it is on a first come first serve basis and probably others have sent in a boat load of stuff, and I think mine have sunk to the bottom of the ocean and have been swallowed by a whale. This group of coins I hope will add to my Buffalo Nicke

Some More..........

The Indians are after the Buffalo Well I have a new batch of coins in the NGC bread basket. This time a couple of Indian Head Pennies and about six Buffalo Nickels. I really like the Buffalo Nickels and these will probably go right into my registry collection. I am not so sure about the Indians, at least one of them should be a great addition. I have been buying most of the Buffalos on eBay but it is difficult on a limited budget as I am sure most of us deal with that limitation. There is alwa

Its A Long Road

The Presidential Dollars are a hopeful beginning.... When I first started collecting as a teenager I suppose I did not take it all very seriously and over the years I have more or less dabbled at the whole thing and made it a delightful diversion. And now well.... I guess I am looking at the process as just a fun experience. I only joined the "society" rather recently and this enterprise has brought me to a place where I have to seek professional graders to validate and therefore register coi

NGC Shipment On The Way

I have been waiting for these to arrive. Well they are in the mail. I sent away the best of the Presidential Dollars that I could come up with 2 graded at MS66 and 1 graded at MS65. I had three Lincoln Wheat cents and they came in at MS66. I also sent in a 1909 VDB Lincoln Cent and it made the grade of AU58, but it did come out of circulation as it was found in a roll of circulated coins. I thought the 1909 was a double die variety but have not received the results on that matter as yet. I als

The Anticipation of Coin Collecting

This is a tease.... Anticipation is a very interesting feeling of emotion for the coin collector. Every time I send out a coin to be graded or am about to acquire a new coin I have a feeling of anticipation and with it comes a sense of incompleteness. I do not know what the outcome of this new discovery will be and I guess that is what adds to the draw of coin collecting. Anticipation pulls me into the true goal of coin collecting, for me it is to collect with satisfaction and therefore enjoy

Bold Strike Cameo Proof a Delightful Coin

And I am not disappointed.... I just received my first 2007 American Eagle Platinum Proof One-Tenth Ounce Coin and I am not disappointed. This is the first one of these that I have purchased from the Mint and even though it was rather pricey I think I will do it again as soon as the 2008 issue comes out. The coin is a beautiful figure of Lady Liberty and the Ultra Cameo is striking to say the least. The coin is flawless and very nice to look at, and the Eagle on the reverse is very boldly stru

1909 VDB

VDB on the reverse appears doubled I recently picked up a 1909 VBB Lincoln Cent and after close inspection concerning the VDB it show doubling on each of the letters. The coin was found in a circulated roll of coins and brought to me where upon I purchased the coin at a reasonable price. I then looked the coin over in detail and found this error. I am wondering if this is common or uncommon. I have not sent the coin out to NGC as yet but plan on doing so as soon as I get more information on th

She Is Full of Grace and Beauty

She is best known by lady Liberty I ordered a 2007 One Tenth Proof Gold Bullion of St Gaudens Liberty from the U.S. Mint and it just arrive a few days ago. Even though this is the smallest of the gold offerings it is something to behold. Looking at this coin is some how mesmerizing. Please allow me for a few minutes to espress my feelings that this image of Liberty has for me, and I trust many of you as well. The design is terrific, a masterpiece of art, grace, style, and beauty. This coin cap

There Is Collecting & Then There Is Coin Collecting

One man's trash is another man's hobby. The Coin Collecting Dilemma When it comes to collecting there does not seem to be any shortage. Everything has some collect-ability it seems. Yet collectables vary so greatly that we sometimes come to the place where we say: Hum?. what shall I collect. I like stamps, but I don't know just where to begin. For a quite a while I saved stamps, there was no apparent goal in mind, except to save them. I began with stamps on the letters, and when I got a let

I am Collecting a Herd of Buffalos

I Found This One Roaming The Range While going on a hunt I was able to track down another Buffalo. They are scarce these days in fact some would say the Bison is extinct. But of course the type I am looking for are not in your pocket change or roaming the great American plains as they once did. I came across a nice 1916, well toned having full horn right to the point and split tail. Tone was a nice golden tone making a nice appearance. I am hoping that it will grade at least MS 65, but whateve

Foreign Coins Are My Fun Time

Foreigns are fun and educational Reciently I found that foreign coins are fun and educational. I had always collected U.S. coins from the start, since I was maybe seven years old. Yet more recently I started going through some old and some not so old foreign coins and found that it was really great fun just to put them up in a binder, checking out the countries, various denominations, and styles of coins. I have learned a lot, and it is helping me spot coins that have been unfamiliar to me. Th

1787 Serpents Head, New Jersey Copper

While going through a box of old foreign coins I came across something that looked different to me and little did I know that it was an early post colonial issue. The New Jersey Copper was unfamiliar to me and I did not know what I was looking at. The Serpents Head on the coin looked foreign to me so I thought it was a coin from another country. When I looked on the reverse there was a shield and some other markings. Still I did not know what I had in my hand. Then one day while I was going th
