More questioning of the local coin shop

just how much truth can I expect? So I was in the coin shop again, and I saw a small gold coin that I asked to look at closer. (I don't have any gold in my collection yet, btw.) Looking closely at it, I realized it was a 2003 mint piece, in a square red shell and a COA from a third party. I asked what the point was of a COA from someone other than the maker of the coin, and the shop guy told me that unless a coin has its COA it gets a lower price, and on newer sets, the shop refuses to buy Pro

I like Van Buren pt2

Why do I like this coin?? My family thinks I look like him, because I need a haircut. severely. I don't know what the Pres's issue was, but my boss has been bugging me about needing a haircut, though she stopped when she saw the coin.

I like Van B.

My new 'fav' coin. I saw it in the shop yesterday, and had to have it. The VanBuren dollar coin, hiding in a proof set with some other old blokes. Why? His hair. My wife didn't like the idea of me sending the guys in for grading, something about liking the mints packaging. So... Ebay I go, picking up the bloke in an NGC PF70uc slab for about $35. Statistically, it made sense. Now, being that I don't need him from his cage, the mint package is going into hiding with my wifes quarters, who also

Ugly Penny is here!

And it got here faster than expected! My 'ugly' Steel Lincoln got here this morning (it shipped from NJ to Ohio in 1 day. Go Fig.) Its actually both uglier than I imagined and more interesting as well. I put it into my 1943 Mint Set, with Pictures. (Much better pics than attached here, by better i mean quite larger.) http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/registry/coins/MySets_Listing.aspx?PeopleSetID=37068&SelectedTab=SetListing As I said, I paid just under $25 for this, and I a

Ebay -ugly coin

Taking a chance on Ugly I randomly looked on eBay last night and found a 1943s NGC steel penny that was titled as Ugly MS67 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=180229570219 I got it for about $25 after shipping, which is less than I have bid for 'lower' graded ones that I never managed to win. Of course, I know already that the seller really didn't like the coin, and I know that the price I paid isn't too bad if it is better then the seller thought, and a bit

Wary of the local coin shop

Saw something that made me pause I went into the local coin shop last weekend to get some silver pieces (got a 08 ASE and a seventy something Mexican 720 silver piece, both raw, not intending on sending for grading) and I saw something that kinda bothered me. One of the workers was cleaning some coins using nail polish remover. Now, I know that using the main chemical in nail polish remover helps get rid of the marks from the PVC flips, but the owner of the shop told him not to do it while cus

Thank you

thanking for responses Thank you to all that responded about the local coin shop. I bought what I did that day because I wanted bullion silver, and aside from some Mint or Proof sets, I won't be buying coins from there. Supplies, maybe. But not raw coins.

Yet another agreeing with Bully

Agreeing with Bullies, what is the world coming to? Its really weird that they do that, yet you have to be a paying member to look up and verify a serial number on a coin to begin with. At least they don't put our addresses on the public view of our pages, then the shady people wouldn't need to copy, they could just go and steal them and break them open all while submitting them again.

1 Point increase

it looks so nice for only 1 point I recently acquired a 1977-D PCGS MS64 FS nickel. Not too bad looking, I think, and it was only a few bucks. Ok, so it wasn't my most glamorous ebay win, paying $1 plus 5 for shipping. But it is pleasant enough. But the catch is that it only took my registry score up by 1 point. I'm still happy with it, I don't think it's too bad for it's age.

Shipping hurts, or jumpstarting a set

Won my largest lot of coins by count yet, all in one year. I decided that for my year sets, I would focus on my 2004 proof set, partly because I had won a clad pf70 dime early on, and I built up around that. I did have a setback after winning a flawed PF70 silver dime, which instead of sending back to where I got it, I sent it to NGC instead, which set me back about as much or more than I paid for the dime in the first place. My favorite coin so far had been the Sac Dollar coin, but I'm digres
