CoinFest in Connecticut

What a show... I attended CoinFest this weekend with my father. It was one of the best coin shows that I ever went to. I couldn't go on Friday for I was sick, but Saturday was awesome. . I was pretty disappointed because I was going to work for Eye Appealing Coins on Saturday, but because I didn't walk the floor on Friday, like I was supposed to, I unfortunately couldn't. When we first got there, the atmosphere was great. We got our name tags and immediately hit the floor. The first table we

A New Passion

Bust Half Dollars? I have found a newly acquired passion for Bust Half Dollars. I became tired of type coins because everyone was doing them and they were too easy to find. There were really no key dates or any rarities that you really need to search for. I decided to do Bust Half Dollars about 2-3 weeks ago. I have found that Bust Half Dollars are beautiful coins and there are many coins that in there that are very tough to get. I wanted to find a set that would be hard and that I can work on

Bust Quarters and New Books Coming

These are ready to explode... As some of you may have noticed, Bust Quarters have now been going up steadily for the last two months or so. People are just starting to realize how hard these quarters are to find. If you go to the population report for them there are only a handful grading for each year. Some years have only 15 graded and you have to assume some of these are crack-outs and re-submitted. Bust Quarters are already on the move and are going to explode when these new books come out

The Heritage Baltimore ANA Auction

Is the coin market slowing down or did things not sell well because of summmer and people on vacations? The auction realized almost $27,000,000 but there were plenty of coins that did not sell well at all. I was watching some coins that I was shocked that did not sell for more. One of them was a 1845 NGC 65 Seated Quarter (picture attached) with amazing color and it only sold for a little over $5000 when it should have brought more like $7000-$8000. There was also 1837 NGC MS62 Bust Quarter th

Reeded Edge Half Dollars-The History

how did they come into being... Texas had been taken under the wing of Mexico for a while until Texas started to disobey Mexico and fought for its independence. First, the Alamo fell to a Mexican army led by Santa Anna. Then few weeks later Santa Anna was taken down at the Battle of San Jacinto, which made Texas separate from Mexico in 1836. In this year it was a time of major developments both globally and domestically. But, it was not until a few years later that Texas became part of America

Do We Really Need CAC Certification?

What is the point... The lastest thing in coin grading is CAC. They are an independent body that judges whether coins graded by third party grading companies are premium quality. Why do we need a "grading service" to judge whether a third party grading service graded a premium coin or to judge if they graded the coin correctly. I think we as coin collectors should make the distinction for ourselves to judge what is premuim quality. Besides NGC already helps us as collectors judge what is pre

Every One is a Coin Collector!

It is just to what extent you are... (where are you on the charts) The Starter Collector The first type of collector is the starter collector. These kinds of people collect the low end or modern coins. They collect the state quarters and buy occasionally. They just buy and go to coin shows at random. They don't read or educate themselves and most likely only do the state quarter collections. I am sorry to say that these are the people that when they go to sell there coins that are worth mayb

NGC Should Get More Respect!

People really need to stop terrorizing NGC for a few reasons that some of us may not understand?... Hi, First of all, people always right about in their journals about how bad NGC is because they didn't holder the coin or didn't get the grade. Sometimes they might make a mistake, they are human like the rest of us. But, all you here about is how bad they are and really I don't think that you can be one of the best grading services if you mess up all the time. NGC has trained professionals wo

Being disrespected

It is sometimes hard to be a kid in the Coin World? When I go to shows sometimes dealers look at me weird because I am only a 14 year old kid and what do I know. It is not until I sit down and talk to them that they actually see that I am pretty knowledgeable. At CoinFest this past month in Connecticut I started to talk to a dealer and he started to quiz me. At first he talked to me like I didn?t know a thing about coins. He then showed me a PR 67* Trade Dollar and asked me why Trade Dollars

Type Collecting Is the Way to Go!

Everything is different... If you are the kind of person that just gets tired of getting the same coin design 50 or more times than that is how I felt about one year ago. I was collecting Buffalos and completed the set in certified PCGS and NGC holders with most of them being in high grades. Most people would keep on going with the series and upgrade all the coins but not me. I decided to sell the set and save some of the money I made and put the rest of the money into my type set that is in p

My first ever Certified Coin!

Thanks dad... I am only 14 and my dad started off my certified coin collection by giving me a 1938-D Buffalo in PCGS MS 66 and when he gave it to me around this holiday season I was thrilled. I mean giving an 8 a coin like that will excite anyone I think. The past six years I have built upon that Buffalo that he had given me and completed the Buffalo nickel series in all NGC and PCGS holders. Most of them were high grades but I have since moved on to Type collecting because after a while I beg

GOLD WILL GO UP AND UP AND UP!

Gold will hit the one thousand mark! Gold is going all the way to $1000 and there is nothing anyone can do about it. The market is getting crushed and things are starting to get bad. The prices of housing keep on dropping and the dollar is getting killed. Even Canadian money is worth more than the US Dollar. All you people with common gold or anyone with gold coins better hold on to it because gold is going up and maybe even higher than $1000. In a few more months you will be happy that you re

This is a Magizine that as a collector you have to read!

Beats any coin magizine... Dallas, TX: Former Frito-Lay International CEO and rare-coin supercollector Jim O'Neal is featured on the cover of the premiere issue of Heritage Magazine for the Intelligent Collector. The quarterly magazine, hitting mailboxes this month, targets readers pursuing the world's most valuable collectibles, with stories on Hollywood memorabilia (a 1934 "The Black Cat" movie poster that fetched more than $250,000); White House mementos (jewelry being auctioned by former

Coin Prices are Going Down!

Be Patient... The market is really bad and if you are really busting a gut to buy just wait a little bit longer. The US DOLLAR is really weak and people cant pay their house payments or their debt. So when they need money they sell things and when there is a lot of material prices go down. The other scenario is that because nobody has any money because they spend it all; none of the coins will be be bought that are on the market.Again when there is to much material prices go down. If you have

UNDERRATED! A Must Read...

Seated Half Dollars! Seated Half Dollars are one of the most under rated series in numismatics today. Especially, the Seated No Motto Halves which you can never seem to find and will be one day ten times more expensive than they are today. When can you buy a coin that only has 2-10 coins better and not pay an outrageous amount of money for it. But, they have come along way since 1966. I looked in one of the Red Books from 1966 and a No Motto half in mint state was only $55 and a With Motto hal

Where have your Coins Been?

Who has had your coins... They always put who has owned high end coins when they are in great collections on the NGC or PCGS insert. But, who owned the coins when they were in circulation. The coins you own could have been spent by former presidents or famous people back in the day. May be Thomas Edison or Ben Franklin owned your coins. Or were they in peoples pockets when they fought in wars, like the civil war. A funny one is maybe your coin was stolen in a bank robbery or thrown in a founta

Don't listen to others!

Collect what you like and not what others think you should collect. When you get a coin dealer newsletter they always say to buy this and that, but is that what you really want to collect. For example, the guys that go to auctions and pay $30,000 for a modern coin. They are buying what they like and trying to build there set to the best of their abilities. Most people think there crazy and I certainly would never pay that much money for a modern even if I was rich out of my mind. But at least

I remember the first one... A must read

What a memory! I remember my very first coin when I was 5 years old. I arrived to the coin show and was nervous about it. But, everyone was very nice to me for the most part. I went to the tables with twenty dollars my dad gave me and didn't see anything that caught my eye yet. I earn my own money now for coins but when I was young my dad funded me. When went to about the tenth table I saw a standing liberty quarter(1930) in EF condition. I asked the guy how much and he said," for you little g

$50 Buffalo Gold Coins- Is going to take the American Eagles Spot!

What a nice coin. This coin is really nice and I think the coin will take over the spot of the American Eagles. People are getting tired of the Eagles and want something new. Why not bring back an old time favorite design. In 2006 it was just one coin. In 2007 the mint will make a 4 coin set. Orders will be pouring in at the mint and most orders probably won't be filled like in 2006. May be they will be smart enough and make a lot of them.

The Presidental Dollars are Starting to get pathetic.... Part 2

Now the Adams dollar is getting ridiculous. The Adams dollar started off with only one "error" in the first three weeks. Now there are several and growing. When are people going to learn that these coins won't be worth anything in a couple of years and no body is going to care about them. When there are to may "errors" people won't know which ones to buy or which ones are rare. I fthe presidental dollars are going to be like this for every coin the fact of the matter is the mint won't have to

Why do we put bad guys on coins?

Why do foriegn countries do it. The United States doesn't put bad and corrupt leaders on coins but Europeon and Asian countries do. Why would you do that? I think that the people are so afraid of these corrupt, bad people that they feel honor towards them. The bad guys might threaten to kill rebels so the people pretend to like him and after a while I think they start to like him. For the people to keep on the bad guys good side they put him on coins and paper money. I am sure there are alot
