Why coins????

Just kids at heart! I haven't written a journal entry in a good long time, but I have been watching and reading. Over that time I have enjoyed so many journal entry's, but it got me wandering, what exactly makes us collect these little pieces of metal anyway. Is it the sense of owning something old, something new, something rare, an investment, something to pass the time, sense of accomplishment, the thrill of the chase, or could it be something deeper. Now I can't speak for everyone but somet

re: NGC vs PCGS? Whatever

It's all about preference. I have to agree with Revenant, I also prefer NGC holds over PCGS holders, but own coins in both. It all goes back to the coin when you are purchasing it. Buy the coin not the holder, but if you are submitting a coin it gets down to who do you trust and what case or presentation do you like, well I personally trust both company?s. Now I know both companys aren't perfect, but tell me someone that is. Why one person would pay more in one company?s holder than the other

Family time!!

The coin gods must be watching! I just can?t believe it, my twelve year old daughter walks in the other day, sits down next to me as I was looking at some coins and says, Dad I want to collect coins too!!! Wow!! For the past year I got crazy looks, dad your crazy, how can you get excited over them coins, your are so uncool, and now she wants to be apart of it, what did I do right?? Of course I said yes, so now I?m extremely happy that she wants to share in something that I?m into, something we

A wonderful hobby revisited!!!

Enjoyment v/s rarity After several days of thinking about this subject, I?m still sitting here and wondering how to attack this touchy topic. The problem, doing something that I?m truly enjoying, (coin collecting), how deep are my pockets, really, and the rarer coins that I dream about collecting. I have read a lot debates about the best way to collect coins and it seems that the overwhelming census is older, rarer coins are the best way to collect in the sense of long term value and I?d have

Jamestown 400th Anniversary

Know your history??? For my forth journal entry, I?d thought that I touch on something a little close to home, Jamestown. Yes I live in the wonderful state of Virginia and we are celebrating the 400th anniversary of Jamestown, which I?m sure most of you know. Now the U.S. mint released the Jamestown Commemorative silver and gold coins earlier this year to also celebrate this event. I personally do not collect commemorative coins but being a Virginian I felt as if I needed to buy this one. So I

Certified Coin Auctions II

Why pay more? In rely to Tomt102516 journal entry, I too watch a lot of online auctions and can?t believe what some people are paying for some of these coins. I also have a few online dealers that I check before bidding and as he does, bid according to the prices I would pay if I were to buy it from the dealer, now after doing that I almost always get out bid. Why pay more? I thought the auctions where a way to save a dollar or two, guess not. Now think about these poor people that buy from th

Spare change

What's in your pocket??? I don?t know if this has been discussed before, but I?m going to bring it up again, I?m sorry if it has. Ever since I started collecting coins, I have found myself always thinking about them. I have subscribed to curtain publications, trying to learn and even drive the wife insane time to time with the big white teethed over priced guys on TV. Who is buying from them anyway??? Well let me get to the point of this journal entry, I never cared or paid any attention to w

A wonderful hobby

Thoughts of a newbie For my first journal entry, and as a newbie, I like to say that so far as a coin collector it has been a wonderful experience. I have learned so much and yet haven?t even scratched the surface. As a collector for less than a year, I feel I have accumulated a nice set of silver eagles so far and plan on finishing both of my sets, from there we will have to see where the coins lead me. I think sometimes we forget that learning is a big part of being a collector. Yeah we own
