What makes a coin or medal rare? Is it the total population, the graded population, or the avalible population?
This is a question that is always on my mind. I tend to believe it is the avalible population. Since regardless of the mintage the surviving population is the true degree of rarity. I know the graded population and the grade play a role in this as well. The problem I have is that since I primarily collect historical medals sometime finding the total mintage is extremely hard at time
Lost 10,000 point and Drop down in Rank
I collect coins and medals. I been focused on the betts series for the past several years. Most of my medals are in my signature set and most have no registry point values. I had the opportunity to aquire a very important medal, in my estimation, in the series. To make this happen I had to auction all the coins in my vam top 100 morgans to make it happen. By selling the set I lost about 10,000 points and drop down many spots in the ranking. So the quest
Re: Is collecting fun for the rich?
First off let me say I am do not think I fall into the catagory of "rich". At any rate, I beleive that collecting is fun for everyone no matter how much they can spend on coins or have invested in coins. I would imagine when they started collecting they were not "rich". They most likely started collecting because a family memeber introduced them to it when they were yound and had little money to spend on coins. They possibly continued collecting as they beca
The feeling you get when you finally...
I have been collecting for about 4 years. By many standards that is still very new. There are several feeling that I get that make it so enjoyable. The feeling of finding a rare variety, the feeling of adding a needed coin or medal to the collection, or getting a bargin on a long awaited coin. Recently I obtained a coin that I have been eyeing several month. I finally found one that was at the price I would pay for it. It arrived today and I got one of t
My fastest turn around time yet.
I send a submission in and it was recieved 5-18 it was for the earlybird service which looks to run 12 business days. I check today and its already been graded and is now on its way back to me. I was very impressed by the speed of this submission. Considereding my last submission ran a little long.
As I have stated in a previous post I am very much into Betts medals right now. I am working on a Signiture set of Betts medals.
I have a Betts-382 in copper and have been looking for one in silver. It is believed that these silver medals were avalible to midshipmen who participatede in the naval battle of Cape Finisterre in 1747 which was part of the War of the Austrian Succession. I recently found a very atractive example and am very excited to show it. It was graded as AU-58, which I was ho
Upgrades
I have had the same experiance as Jackson on several occasions. The last upgrade I tried was about a year ago. I had a 1802 Bust Dollar graded by Anacs as AU50. I first sent it into PCGS for an upgrade and it came back in same holder. I decided to crack it out and send it to NGC. It came back as cleaned. I ended up sendind it back to PCGS and to my final dismay it came back XF45. Point being I should have stayed with the AU50 Anacs.
Any Other Betts Medal Collectors?
I have recently started collecting betts medals. I was actual turned on to this series after purchasing the following coin from the John J. Ford Collection. It shows the British Victories of 1758 B-416 in bronze the pic is the reverse. I just cannot get enough of them! They are great and I very much enjoy the historical aspect of them as well. Am I the only one?
