Realistic Coin Values

Modern Commemoratives in the Stratosphere!! I spent a great many hours looking at the other registered collectors of the Modern Commemorative Series. Many of the coins in this group are so rich with history and the Jamestown Series is just beautiful. I don't pay much attention to the value of the coins, as such, as I am more of a collector than anything else. I have been struck by the values listed for so many of these modern coins. They just can't be correct, can they? There is no way th

Wavering on Presidential Dollars

Too much $$ for too little Although I collecto Modern Commemoratives ALMOST exlcusively, I do add interesting and appealing coins to my collection. I have never collected any error coins, but I was toying with the ideal of adding one or two of those smooth edge Washington Dollars to my cache. After looking at eBay and a number of other selling sites, I counted hundreds of error Washingtons for sale, at prices ranging up to $600.00 for the smooth edge ones. That price had increased by a fact

NGC, PCGS and A View to a "Killing"

Do My Eyes and Magnifier Still Work? Since it is a dreary day here in Southern California, I have used it as an excuse [as if I need one] to pull out the boxes of my Modern Commemorative Registry Set and take a tour. It is amazing what I can find on the 732nd inspection that I didn't find on the 731st! Anyway, most of my coins are in NGC holders--about 80%; the rest PCGS, obviously. I am seeking to have mostly MS/PR 70 specimens, though I will never reach that goal, but right now I am runni

Thoughts re: MULTIPLE HOLDERS

Is Presentation Enhanced? I would appreciate any thoughts regarding NGC's Multiple Holders. I am considering the aesthetics/presentation value of putting each individual series of MODERN COMMEMORATIVES into their own multiple holder, where feasible. As an example: displaying the 2006 Old San Francisco Mint Proof and Mint State $5 gold coins in the same holder as the Proof and Mint State Silver Dollars. Likewise with the Jamestown, 2003 First Flight and so on. Of course, this wouldn't work

All Collecting Goals Are WORTHWHILE!

Collectors slighted by attitudes of the BIG MONEY folks. I have noticed a certain, shall we say "snobbery" (?) or arrogance in the attitudes of many dealers/collectors, especially those at coin shows. I have heard phrases like "What's the matter with you, can't you see it's a bargain at only $65,000!!" tossed about, as if most of us are millionaires. While my circumstances have improved over the years, NOTHING excites me like finding a worn Buffalo nickel in my change or a box full of old Linc
