thoughts on new presidential dollars in hand

48 posts in this topic

I just got a couple of rolls of the presidential washington dollars and opened one roll to see if I could submit any for grading. What a dissapointment! There were a lot of bag marks and dents on the coins. On several of the obverse fields, there were lines like hairline rays on the lower left side of Washingtons face. Several of the reverse had what looked like uneven application of whatever they used to person_having_a_hard_time_understanding_my_point the tarnish that was so prevalent on the Sacawega dollars. All of them had some hazing on the right side of the obverse. I had to look hard to find 5 in a roll to submit, and they had several marks and dents. As I write this, I am not even sure if I will send them in. They look like circulated coinage out of a roll. This is the first time I bought a bank roll on the first day of issue, and my question is this, Is this normal for Bank rolls of new issues? Do you have to buy directly from the Mint to get good quality coins? 893whatthe.gif

The $200 I just got from the bank are as bad as you describe. I went through about 100 to find five suitable for submission.

The real bummer for me was that my bank (Bank of America, tellers at the World Headquarters building in Charlotte) only had Philadelphia srikes. I guess that makes sense geographically, but still a bummer.

So far I've spent about twelve of them. Both cashiers looked at them with interest. They seemed to be expecting them unlike most people in the public.

I actually think this bodes well. Having too many high grade MS business strikes may ruin the modern business strike clad collecting segment. Having a challenge is a good thing.

This is true. I had hoped it would be a good thing for me. Do you think I should send in the ones that I have with the problems mentioned or just hold them? This is all new for me and I had hoped to have a couple of at least 69s in three rolls. I opened just one roll and decided to auction off the other two after looking at the one opened. foreheadslap.gif

You are right it is a bummer. I was expecting something a little better quality. Is this normal for Bank rolls of first day issues? If so, then I will know what to expect on the next go around. BTW, my bank only had Denver strikes and I am in Ms. sign-rantpost.gif

Those look alot like mine. What could have caused the hairlines on the right of Washinton face? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

Not quite sure but I do know that if any of these coins get to be at least an MS67, they'll be lucky by the sounds of it.These look like they've been thru the mill already.

Could it be because the Mint is trying to fill an order of 300,000,000 within a few weeks?

On a related note, my bank will not order them and the local Wal*Mart assistant manager had no idea what I was talking about.

I wouldn't rush to have any of these graded. The Mint sets hopefully will have better examples. I still wouldn't slab them unless they looked like better than 68 and even then I think it's a waste. I still think they are perhaps the worst looking coin the US has ever produced and will not collect them.

Uglier than Eisenhowers?
Some of those toned silver Ikes look pretty cool IMO laugh.gif

I went and got my rolls today and I was kinda disappointed. If the SBA failed due to its being confused with the quarter, this coin is destined for failure. The finish is nothing like the Sacagawea and just appears as if it were a copper wash SBA. I think the lemmings like us will keep up with it but I will be surprised if the public embraces it.

If your bank refuses to order them, REPORT THEM TO THE TREASURY DEPARTMENT. It is ILLEGAL for them to refuse.

Call me crazy or maybe cause I'm a child of the 50's but I lkie Ikes, I have a complete Dansco including proofs and some brown box Ikes. I am lately toying with the idea of picking up some silver proofs to add to my NGC Morgans, kind of a type set of US dollars but I am drawing the line on these casino tokens. That $1 designation really makes it look like a slot machine token. I bet you could dig up some old Shell President tokens and pass them off as a buck right now.

Is it just illegal to not accept them from the public? Or to banks have to order them as well? Where is it stated that banks are required to order the coins?

I got mine today, and I guess I'll be the first to say I LOVE them! The statue of Liberty on the reverse is awesome. And Ol' Gorge doesn't look to bad. None of mine look as bad as you guys are describing. Maybe I got lucky?

The one I have is kinda baggy, too, but I wanted it for a conversation piece. I was showing it to some friends a couple days ago, and they thought the edge lettering was really neat.

They also said it looked like foreign money. confused-smiley-013.gif

I think they're alright coins. The edged letting is different and hope they don't wear off easy or it will be very hard to distinguish mints on these things. The roll I have doesn't look real bad, at least the ones on each end, as some have described. Haven't opent it yet. Of course, depending on where you are, I have the D mints. I think that there will be alot circulated and alot of these probably bang around quite abit before they hit the banks. I also think the best bet would be waiting for the mint sets for some possibly better quality coins.

I got a few rolls of Denver Mint coins today, and they looked pretty good. I'll have to sit down tonight and examine a few more closely.

Went through a $1000 box of P's and $1000 box of D's today for NGC Prescreen. These things are awfully BU. (Battered and Ugly) Many of them looked circ!

Wound up with 100 of each that are MS65-66. Many will come back "BU" in the First day holders since MS-65 is a stretch on most of them.

IMHO, MS-67 will be the $100-ish grade. MS-68 will be the $$$$$ top pop for non-satin business strikes.

Given how much work it will take to find a MS-67/8, the price might be worth the labor for the people finding these.
