I got 2 unopened box of 10 sets 20th anniversary american eagles. do you guys think i should grade all of them now. Or maybe just wait to see how high prices will go for the unopenned boxes. and then sell the unopenned boxes..

they are going at 3.000-3400 on ebay right now...you guys think the prices will keep going up?.. im new to this coin business. So i figured i would ask you guys for your opinions.

Thanks !!

Why don't you send one box in to get graded and then hold onto the other and sell later. I don't know how much longer these prices will stay up there.

Good luck in your decision.

If I had a dollar for every speculation I got wrong, I would break even! tonofbricks.gif

Let's see... I thought the 2005 Mint Sets would go up. It is the first year of the "satin" finish, so it should have been a good bet as being a first year issue. Nope... congress allowed the Mint to extend the sales of 2005 nickels and crashed that market.

I have three Legacy of Freedom sets (2002 Silver Eagle and Britannia) and the British counterpart (Ladies of Freedom). None of the set sold even though both mints sold out of both products.

Oh... then there are the Silver Proof sets. Sure the 1999 and the 2001 sells well, but there are no premiums on top of the 2002-2006 sets. And the 2000 set does not sell for much of a premium. One would think that people would want to catch up on the silver Quarters, right? I have five sets of the 2002-2005 that I may post for cost.

Modern Commems, even if sold out, have not sold for much of a premium. Few have sold. But when I decided that I did not want to collect commems and sold off those that did not interest me, I did better selling the coins to dealers and not on eBay.

I did make a good premium on the Texas Coin and Currency set from the BEP. But there was a limit of 2000 sets. I had three. Two I sold on eBay for twice what I paid. The other I sold to a dealer who was desperate and made 150 percent on that deal. That was a good transaction.

That's only a few. IMHO, modern coins are difficult to speculate with. If you see an opportunity, take it now. You do not know what the market will be in the future.

That's just my opinion, I could be wrong! devil.gif

Considering I have been on both sides of this issue I will tell you my experience. I ordered a total of 67 sets of 20th Anniversary silver eagles. I was thinking about just selling the box but decided that I should have them graded. I figured that the wrost case scenario would be every coin graded PF69 and MS69 (given the census figures on NGC, 68 were rare). the current price paid for a 69 set was about 270.00. so I figured worst case was $2700.00 per box. That first set was very close to the worst case scenario as all uncirculated coins graded MS69, I did get (2) PF70 reverse proofs and 5 regular PF70. All coins in this set were sold for $4400.00. So my $1000.00 box plus $500 grading/shipping ($1500.00 total investment) got me a profit of $2900.00. If I would have sold the unopened box from the mint I couls have sold it for about $3200.00 for a profit of $2200.00 (albeit I didnt have to do any work!). So was it worth the extra 700 bucks to photograph and post 20 auctions? I guess, but it was close.

Now here is the other side of the coin. My second set arrived and included 8 reverse proof PF70s, 6 MS70s and 6 regular PF70s. This box has a potential worth of 12,000.00 bucks. Plus, since I took all the pictures already from the previous set, I dont have much work to do to post these. In fact I got so many of the perfect sets, I will be selling them at a relatively steep discount just to move them quickly.

I say Grade um!

Alright guys...Thanks Alot... I just sent 1 for grading and i'll keep the second for now...depending on the results of the gradings i might send the second box... I actually have now 3 sealed 10 sets and 2 sealed 5 sets... I guess i will just keep 1 10 set and 1 five set and grade the rest of them and sell them as a graded set on ebay. I'll post here the results for the grading when i get them..

Thanks,

Anderson

Did you read the thread about the Silver Proof Quarter sets? Evidently they started in 2004. If this is not the case, contact the OP and sell him your 2002 and 2003 sets. He's dying for them.
