United States Mint Presidential $1 Coin e-Newsletter, Issue 4 — January 2007

PUBLIC OFFERED FIRST GLIMPSE OF NEW PRESIDENTIAL $1 COIN

The United States Mint is embarking on a 10-city Presidential $1 Coin education tour. Beginning January 23, 2007, the United States Mint may be in a city near you. Events will be held from Boston, MA, to Houston, TX. At each of these 10 locations, local residents will have the opportunity to see and hold the new George Washington $1 Coin, even before its official release on February 15, 2007. And even though no one will be able to walk away from one of these events with a new Presidential $1 Coin in their pocket, everyone will have the opportunity to have their picture taken marking their participation in this historic event.

The Presidential $1 Coins, which feature former U.S. presidents on one side and the Statue of Liberty on the other, are also expected to be a great educational tool for citizens of all ages. For the first time since the 1930's, these circulating coins feature distinctive lettering inscribed around the edge of the coin (see image below).

A George Washington historian will visit a local school and talk about the life of President Washington. Later in the day, and open to the public, local residents can see the new Presidential $1 Coin up close and personal at a venue listed below. Take-home educational materials from the United States Mint will also be available.

Presidential $1 Coin Program

Like the United States Mint's successful 50 State Quarters® Program on which it was modeled, the Presidential $1 Coin Program features a systematically rotating design. The first four $1 coins will commemorate George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison.

United States Mint Director, Edmund C. Moy, unveils the design of the George Washington $1 Coin. "The new Presidential $1 Coins are an educational and fun way to learn about former presidents," said Director Moy. "Our research indicates that, like the 50 State Quarters, the Presidential $1 Coins will be popular with millions of Americans."

According to a study commissioned by the United States Mint, about half of all Americans are interested in collecting the Presidential $1 Coins - but their appeal does not end with collecting.

"Congress recognized that the 50 State Quarters Program showed how a systematically changing design can spark public interest in a coin and we're hoping to build on that success," Director Moy said.

Traditional Subjects, Unique Design

The designs of the coins are bold and dramatic, with traditional inscriptions featured on the edge. The edge lettering will prominently feature the inscriptions "E Pluribus Unum" and "In God We Trust," the year of minting or issuance, and the mint mark, making these coins unique among today's U.S. circulating coins.

The new Presidential $1 Coins are identical in color and size to the Sacagawea Golden Dollars, and have the same distinctive rim and tactile features to assist the visually impaired. Additionally, the new $1 coins carry the same electromagnetic signature as both the Sacagawea Golden Dollar and the Susan B. Anthony dollar, making them readily acceptable in vending machines that currently accept dollar coins.

The face of each coin will feature an image of a former president and the years of his term of office. The reverse of the coin shows an image of the Statue of Liberty and the inscriptions "The United States of America" and "$1."

Popularity will not necessarily translate into circulation. A lot of these will be kept out of circulation. I really hope they circulate, but I'm not holding my breath. frown.gif

According to a study commissioned by the United States Mint, about half of all Americans are interested in collecting the Presidential $1 Coins

I seriously doubt if half of all Americans even know that they are planning to make president dollars. What their survey probably really showed was that half of all the people they asked who knew about the coin said that if they got one they would keep it. Could mean they want to collect it, could mean they think they will be something you don't normally see like a half dollar is, could mean that they don't want to bother carrying it and would toss it aside and use paper dollars.

"Our research indicates that, like the 50 State Quarters, the Presidential $1 Coins will be popular with millions of Americans."

We need to save this line so we can toss it back at them if they have to go back to bag and roll sales only long about 2008.
