NGC Holder question...

19 posts in this topic

I was looking through Ebay. (being that looking at and buying coins has now become an addiction) Anyway I ran across this auction web page What I was wondering about is why does the 2001 Silver Eagles NGC Label look different? I looked up other NGC 2001 silver eagles and there labels matched the others in the photo. Thx for any info.

I've seen a number of different inserts including an eagle/flag insert and a WTC insert (not death slab silver but an insert with a picture of the WTC).

I think you link is bad or maybe it is just me.

When it opens on your browser, delete everything in front of cgi.ebay. and hit enter.

Thanks for the tip Bob.

Check out this one: 2006 ASE 1 of first 50K struck. Is this better than First Strikes? Is there a separate registry entry for these?

I've also seen these inserts on ASEs without special designations.

Hi, zoins

Isn't that NGC insert used by the Coin Vault guys on cable TV? confused.gif

No idea. I don't watch Coin Vault, just scan the bay. Maybe the other, earlier ASEs I saw with this style insert were also originally from Coin Vault (2001-2003s?)?

Isn't that NGC insert used by the Coin Vault guys on cable TV?

Yes, the company behind Coin Vault on ShopAtHomeTV managed to obtain the 2006 Silver Eagle green monster boxes numbered 1 through 100 as originally shipped from the Mint. This numbering appears on the outside of the box in large black Sharpie style writing as well as on the inside adding machine printout (a.k.a. "check tab tape").

The Mint assigns box numbers in the order in which the Mint packs the boxes. Note that, despite the pedigree on the NGC label which was allegedly verified by at least one Mint official, box numbers do not necesssarily correspond to the order in which the coins were physically struck, as articulated on this Mint advisory page..

As Robert Chambers narrates the story, Coin Vault split a shipment with another bullion dealer and found, after receiving their share, that they had very low numbered boxes. They contacted the other dealer and found that the dealer had the remaining low numbered boxes from the first 100, so Coin Vault worked out a deal to acquire them all. Coin Vault then approached NGC and arranged to use the special label along with the special designation.

In practical terms the label is nice but no more meaningful than either the FIRST STRIKES or EARLY RELEASES so-called pedigrees. The bottom line, however, is that all 50,000 of these coins originated with Coin Vault no matter who you see selling them now.

As for the 2001 WTC special label, I've seen that from time to time and actually like it. I'm unsure as to its origin. NGC will use special inserts for a fee and at their sole discretion for important clients (such as Coin Vault).

The question you have asked about, not the question being answered, is simple. The 2001 in the picture provided is just an earlier generation holder. They stopped using these holders several years ago (obviously since 2001). Everyone else is going off on tangents about special labels, but there is nothing special about this 2001 eagle, just an old holder.

In the original eBay auction you posted there are three different types of NGC holders in that group. The 2001 happens to be the oldest of the three and it was used from August 2000 through July 2001. A different holder (NGC 8) was used during August of 2001. This holder was then revived and used from Sept 2001 til August 18th 2003. It is listed as NGC 7. The 1999 coin is in a later holder (NGC 13) used from Sept 1 2003 to Nov 2004. The other four slabs are the current style used from Nov 2004 to date (NGC 16).

NGC used roughly 11 different varieties of holders from 1987 to Dec 2003. (A new early variety has just recently come to light. It would fall between the third and fourth generation of slab and would have been used in late Oct or early Nov of 1987. It probably isn't really a true variety but instead is a mule made with a fourth generation label being placed on a left over second generation central insert.) Since Dec 2003 they have used an additional eight varieties. And this does not include all the novelty varieties for the First Strikes, First Releases,TV people, Binion hoard, Binion Silver collection, Nevada silver hoard, Fitzgerald collection etc or all of the Sample or Presentation slabs. Just the 18 or 19 different production slabs
