had a really nice christmas present today....

ME TOO. I ordered 6 sets the 1st day they became available and after I did I wished I had ordered the other 4 that I was allowed to order. Well on 10/20 I placed an order for the other 4 sets and I recieved them today. I opened the box of 6 cause I didnt understand sending coins that I havent even looked at to a grading company. But now I have decided I wanted to collect all the Silver eagles both proof and uncirculated in plastic. And I think it would be cheaper for me to send this unopened box of 4 sets to NGC than to purchase these coins alrdy slabbed.

I am always learning so I love to get advice. Does it make sense to send these sets in to be graded? Also being these 4 were ordered on 10/20 is there a chance that any of these coins are returned coins? Any advice appreciated. I was going to start another thread but after reading on the forum it looks like some people are tired of talkin about 20th anniversary eagles. Also I've asked this question before but I figure it wont hurt to ask again. If you think sending these in to be graded is a good idea and if you didnt have a NGC membership yet (or any other) what would you do to have them graded? Thanks for anyones time.

Joining the NGC Collectors Society will give you a 10% discount on grading fees as long as you submit your coins using the online submission form. Grading for the twelve coins in your four unopened sets will be:

12 * $12.50 = $150 minus 10% = $135

Shipping will probably be another $15 - $20 each way.

If you're up for the speculative expense, I'd say go for it. Assume you'll get mostly 69s, and perhaps you'll be pleasantly surprised!

Best of luck,893crossfingers-thumb.gif

me personally i am not going to open the box. my reason being that if alot of the sets were opened and sent in for slabing then i would think that original and unopened sets would be worth a nice premium. they will know that the coins in these sets were never cherry picked and swithched . i never liked the idea of tpg's anyway. most of the coins i have purchased for my kids collections are raw from seeing them in hand at the local coin shows.and are in dansco albums . the slabed ones i have are only to eventually sell at a profit. unfortunately that is the game being played right now. or at least until the next marketing scam comes along. good luck with your eventual decision.

Shallow , I'm not trying to pick a fight or start trouble, but your explanation doesn't make sense:

Your unopened box might sell for a nice premium, as you say, and buyers would know they have never been cherrypicked or switched. Isn't it a lot easier to remove and replace packing tape than it is to crack open a slab? What guarantee would a future buyer have that the coins aren't damaged or in an unacceptable condition for the profits you expect to receive?

You don't like the idea of the TPG's, yet you have slabbed coins to, eventually, sell at a profit.

You don't like the game, yet you participate even though nobody is forcing you.

You equate the reputable TPG's with marketing scams. It appears that it is quite all right for you to make dirty, rotten, nasty profits, but it is wrong for a business to do the same. It sounds kind of hypocritical to me.

Please tell me, "Why do you even bother to come here?"

If NGC is just like all the other scams, then why don't you leave?

i came here because i thought it was a coin forum about "coins" and not a slab forum. i used to be fun to collect coins and see what other people were collecting but the hobby has evolved into something else. the slabed coins i have are used to fund the purchase of nice raw coins for my kids. so i have to play the game to get the coins i like. yeah i'm really going to make huge, dirty profits off 2 20th anniversary sets. wow!.

Shallow you are right. This forum is about coins, but lets get down to it all. Slabs are a big part of the industry weather or not you collect them or sell them. I too love raw coins, but just because a coin is in a slab will not stop me from buying it. It should not stop you either. Profit is not a dirty word, its how the world keeps going. Nobody does anything for free. There are far greater scams than what go on in the coin industry. Knowledge is power in the coin game and the quicker you can get it, the better off you will be for your own good. Stick around and jump in on the conversations. I would love to hear what you have to say on buffalo nickels!

If you came here with the intention of discussing coins, then why did you mention the TPG's in a derogatory manner in the first place?. You were the one who likened them to a scam. Isn't a scam just a ploy to make illegal and/or unethical profits? You were the one who mentioned "profits" more than once as your objective. It seems to me that you're "biting the hand that feeds you."

By the way, more than 90% of the coins I own are raw. I've even cracked a few to free them from their life sentence. I'm not playing the game, but I do live by the rules.
