Forum software...

30 posts in this topic

Other than the slow server here (which has been pretty good since the RAM upgrade smile.gif ), the software and interface is far superior on this side of the street, IMHO. In addition, I much prefer the quote features here as a reader. The only reason I prefer PCGS forums is because of the depth and breadth of knowledge its user base provides, but the NGC software (both forums and registry) is superior....Mike

MrEureka when I first looked at these boards I felt as you did that the software was a little daunting. Now that I’ve made a few posts the system is actually easy to navigate in.

I registered both here and across the street years ago, but I so much prefer the CU forum software that I pretty much stayed over there. (9700 posts there, 3 here!)

Anyone here agree or disagree about the software?

Welcome!

What are you in for? 27_laughing.gif

The only thing I miss is the capability to store images like you can ATS...but it still does not inhibit good communications with other collectors.

Even though you do not get responses, here on this forum you can see that at least your topic/thread was opened, maybe even read!

That and we don't have Legend (thank the world) psssst...don't tell her we are here! 893whatthe.gif

I think one is used to the software they use the most. As such, I am most used to using the newsreader Agent for reading r.c.c rather than using any web-based forums. I don't think the webification of the internet is a good thing.

However, here I note I can post using HTML rather than needing to use that blasted UBB code or whatever it's called.

Hi Andy, good to see you over here. It took me a couple of days to get used to the different interface. I'm guessing it's just a case of not being able to teach a couple of old dogs new tricks.

BTW, I enjoyed the recent Lie, Cheat and Steal in the Numismatist. So where did you fall, Pro or Con?

I might have argued it both ways for the article. We do that sometimes. But in the real world, I'd say the dealer isn't REQUIRED to give a refund on a deceptively whizzed coin if the return privilege has expired. However, as a dealer, I'd usually (but not always) CHOOSE to give the refund anyway.

Disagree. Among other things, features like jumping to the first unread post in a thread, showing who you are responding to, and ***you are ignoring this user*** make this software better.

Mr. Eureka is correct. I joined both forums about the same time, but posted about ten times as often on CU.

When is NGC going to provide us with picture storage? The CU procedure works so smoothly, much quicker than if I store in Comcast.

NGC does provide storage for images, but it may not be as convenient for everyone as the PCGS method. Aside from the ability to attach an image to a post, NGC has a Testing Forum where many folks go to upload images. The images may be up to 200kb in size, which is far larger than the 50kb size that PCGS limits for users, and you can upload an apparently infinite number of images. The problem, however, is that there is not a discrete image folder at NGC, similar to the one that one can access when writing a post at PCGS. My solution to this problem, which is a solution that others have followed, too, is to start a test thread in the Testing Forum and to then add a coin to it each time I want NGC to host an image. I then take the URL for that saved image and embed it within the text of whatever post I am writing. It isn't the best system out there, but if you are trying to avoid uploading your images to another site then this method isn't bad.

I agree with you on that point, but I will sometimes put images on the NGC servers and other forum members appear to dislike using their own webspace.

Another solution is to bookmark your attachments if you want to refer to them again. Create seperate folders/subfolders in your favorites and you can get to them easily. Well, as long as you're on the same computer.

First, Welcome!

Tomb makes the point about the photos. You can upload larger photos here, and I keep a running thread on the Testing section. I started doing that when the server I used for my photos (flickr) had reached a limit and I had to start deleting photos. When I deleted them, they would no longer show up on whatever forum I linked them to. Uploading them here makes them 'permanent'.

Learning to use the software here has been a little odd but I am becoming more comfortable with it. It does have several features which I do find very useful. Besides when you are using a computer which at random will suddenly ignore the space bar, or do up line feeds, or jump the curser to random locations with each key press, or sometimes wipe out whole lines of text because you pressed the shift key to capitalize a letter, the forum software is the least of your frustrations.

As to wanting to be able to upload images to NGC rather than a outside server, I have a bunch of images on the PCGS server. The only way I can access them now is to go find where I used them in a thread over there so I can either copy the URL of the image, or copy and resave my image to my outside server. I think I will stick to the outside image server I'm using now.

I use a program called ACDSee 6.0, and I don't have to upload my images to any online storage like Photobucket. Everything goes right from my computer to the post.

what does ACDSee do, optimize the pixels of the pic so it's small enough in size to upload directly to a site? Is it shareware?
