1999 W ERROR $5 GOLD EAGLE

3 posts in this topic

This coin and the similar 1999-W $10 Gold Eagle are mint state coins inadvertently struck using unpolished dies intended for the proof versions. The coins are unique in the mint state series because they bear the "W" West Point mint mark normally reserved for the proof coins.

As of this writing, NGC reports having certified 1117 examples of the $5 coin. For PCGS, there are 728 coins certified as MS69 with none higher. Examples certified by ICG and even AGC are also available. Therefore, I'd estimate the current known total to be "at least 2000." The going rate for an NGC MS69 example is about $300.

The $10 coin is at present rarer, at least in certified form. NGC reports having certified a total of 190 examples, while PCGS reports 313 MS69 examples, with none higher.

Hope this helps!
