Gorgeous 1904 Proof set

28 posts in this topic

Hey everyone! I was just feeling really giddy today because of this stunning 1904 Proof set that came in to our shop today. I'm not posting because I'm trying to sell it, but I think there are some people here that might appreciate just looking at the image. I'm also proud of the picture, one of my better ones.

Hats off to NGC for holdering such quality coins and grading them appropriately. Who says that the only good ones are in PCGS holders? Not me. Anyway, it's graded 65 Red CAM, 64, 67,67,67, 66. The Quarter and Half have Cameo obverses. The toning is spectacular, particularly on the Dime and Quarter. Blue, purple, orange, green, gold etc. Would appear to be a TRUE matched and original set, the likes of which are quite difficult to locate these days. Enjoy the attached picture.

Looks like a nice original and matched set to me. I'm sure whoever put this set together looked long and hard to find these high grade pieces to match as well as they do.

Simply stunning - thanks for sharing. How did you get the black background & what photo editing software are you using? Great images.

WOW! What a set! cool.gif

I have not seen an original set like that in a long time. Sets like this are far better than the assembled sets or the usually dipped to death stuff that one usually sees. I once owned a 1909 set like that which I sold to raise the down payment on my first house.

It would be a shame to break such a piece of numismatic history up, but I know that it will happen. I wish I had the "strong hands" to buy the set and keep it intact, but I don't.

Congrats on such an unusual find.

Hoot, it's just an HP 5300C scanner and Adobe photoshop 6.0. You just start a new canvas and choose your background color. Then in other windows I scanned one side at a time, trying to tilt the coins just the right way so they were reasonably represented without being overblown. Use the circular marquee to cut the coin out then paste it on the background making sure they were lined up .

Truth, the price isn't a big secret or anything but the post was meant for enjoyment purposes. In my mind posting the price crosses the line of making it a solicitation to sell and that's not my motivation here. Of course it is for sale, if anyone was really interested they could always contact me privately. I believe you and I have worked together once so you know where to find me if you ever felt the inclinition to do so for some odd reason.

In general terms though I figure that it's priced about 50% over what the individual pieces might cost if bought one at a time and without color. Considering the beautiful toning and the well matched nature of the set, it doesn't seem to be unreasonable.

By the way, the image was still a work in progress when I posted last night. I stayed up very late putting the finishing touches, and adding the final coin which proves the set to be a bargain at any price. Please check the new picture attached to this message.

What a great set (sans Kennedy of course)! Thanks for sharing it. Are you planning on selling it as a set? It would seem somewhat disappointing to see it broken up but as someone else said, that's likely to happen someday.

Yeah, but if you make someone take that Kennedy, you ought to offer a discount 893whatthe.gif

Absolutely fantastic set and pictures. The dime fascinates me because I have a liberty nickel with the same toning pattern and colors and was told by a former grader that the toning was not market acceptable.

Yeah that is a very attractive & well matched set. Much better than the blast white ones with brown dip tone on the peripheral and the nasty water spots. And no fingerprints. The "well matched" means a lot, it's not haphazard like somebody just went on eBay or Teletede buying coins and called it a Proof Set.

I've noticed both carlwolworth & myself have Barbers similiar to yours; Can you shed any light on how they got that look?
