The Good and the Ugly

12 posts in this topic

First the Ugly: If you submitted coins at Long Beach at the end of May and paid $30. per coin for the 15 day Service, when would you expect your coins back? Right. It's getting ugly. Twice the 15 day promise and my submission hasn't entered the Grading Room yet.

Ok, vent over. Now the GOOD. Well, I guess, kind of. I sent off on the NGC 'Early Bird' submission to NGC six colorful war Jeffersons. Each is GEM with wonderful color received from years being housed in kraft envelopes, wrapped in tissue.

Well I received a warm telephone call from NGC's head grader (I apologize for forgetting his name!) stating the Graders went back and forth on my submission and although it isn't determined the Jeffersons are AT they are not "Market Acceptable". I was kind of bummed but understood. Now, here's the kicker: I was also told because they are 'liner' coins I wouldn't be charged for this submission. In other words, NGC's service was free.

Who else would be so kind? This was offered without any grief on my part toward them.

Now, regarding the coins- I'll ship them off to SEGS and they'll get graded (as really they probably should), but wasn't that the coolest deal having NGC call and explain why coins would not be holdered and on top of that to make it all a no charge?

So, PCGS: 893frustrated.gif

And, NGC: cloud9.gif

I think it's great to hear NGC doing such a great job on customer service. I think they did the right thing in calling you on coins they weren't sure about and decided not to charge for the submission because they weren't sure about them. It's great to hear these stories!

Why must you always bash PCGS? That's all this forum ever has is PCGS bashing. grin.gif

15 days is business days, that's 3 weeks. Given what they did in the past, they will give you some BS reason that it took PCGS at 3 more weeks to get the coins from Long Beach all the way down to Newport Beach and entered into their system. Now all you have to do is call David Hall and convince him to give you the free grading certificates.

I honestly cannot beileve that in order to get the free grading coupons when they miss the deadline that you have to contact David Hall and convince him to give them to you. It should be automatic. They should stick them in with the return submission.

Were these the coins you were telling me about? The ones you stuck in the toilet paper roll tubes and baked in the oven?

Is the head grader John Maben? Perhaps he is the finalizer? I can't keep track of their titles and what they do. smile.gif

I would have thought the EarlyBird submissions from Long Beach would have been done by now. My last batch was submitted both at Long Beach and some a week after and they were done a while ago. Still, they are a hell of a lot faster than PCGS and light years faster than ANACS!

I gave NGC some Modern and Economy coins at Long Beach and they were just listed in Quality Control today. Interesting stuff like some PL/DPL silver Roosevelts/modern commems/state quarters.

Greg- These Early Bird submissions were NOT turned in at Long Beach with NGC. One was sent the 10th and the other the 12th (my membership had arrived and I used the four coupons with the lot).

Oh, nice touch with the toilet roles/tissue/AT. Tell me again how that is done?

Would it make sense to consider ANACS instead? I see some pretty amazing toning in ANACS holders, and they seem to be more respected than SEGS.

You're right. They'll go to ANACS instead.

I assume you'll have pictures for us when they come back from NGC? laugh.gif

Actually, I've never tried to post a photo here, only over at PCGS. Is there a tutoral/Thread here that'll show me how?

I should have them back from NGC in a few days and will be pleased to show them off here before sending to ANACS.

When you reply, below the gremlins is the box that says "I want to preview/attach a file." Make sure it's checked, and then you'll see the line where you can attach a file from your computer on the next screen.

I've had NGC graders call my home phone number and explain to me why they graded certain coins certain grades. These weren't high priced coins, rather, coins that they thought might have been lightly cleaned perhaps 100 years ago but they couldn't be certain. So, the coins were slabbed but some were slabbed one MS grade lower than they might otherwise have given the coin. The phone call was to explain the grading to me.

Thanks Keith, so simple yet without knowing how, impossible up to now.

Tom, I would hope PCGS would one day do so. But, like it is said about 'hope': "[!@#%^&^] in one hand and hope in the other and see which one fills up first" confused.gif
