Thanks For An Outstanding Job

I recently submitted some modern commemoratives and proof silver eagles for conservation prior to grading. The coins exhibited scattered spotting and unattractive toning, but the surfaces seemed fundamentally strong. NCS conserved the coins in a manner that removed the cosmetic blemishes and returned them to near- or as-minted appearance (which was what I wanted). The coins graded wonderfully and, in one case, yielded an unexpected MS70 for my collection.

I appreciate that conservation, and especially conservation of modern issues, is not everyone's cup of tea. I did, however, want to state that my first NCS experience was an unmitigated success. I submitted moderns in part because I wanted to see what NCS could do with them while not risking large sums. I'm pleased with the results and would not hesitate to submit other, more expensive coins should situations merit.

A final note: Yesterday I read a thread on the PCGS boards in which various contributors, including to my disappointment some who post regularly on the NGC boards, alleged that NCS are in the "coin doctoring" business. These people owe it to themselves, and to any sense of intellectual honesty they may possess, to become educated before making a public display of ignorance. There's a clear difference between conservation and doctoring. Learn it.

Sincerely,

Beijim

I am glad to see that NCS services have been of good use to your collection.

Modern coins do have their specific conservation issues. Removal of residues and spots will frequently cause a coin to grade higher and with extra designations like cameo and ultra cameo. Sometimes the results can be surprising as you experienced with the 70.

On the downside, these coins will easily show the signs of improper conservation techniques. It is unfortuate when we receive submissions of modern coins where improper techniques were used in the past. We are unable to do anything about the hairlines and scratches.

We look forward to working on additional pieces in your collection.

Thanks, Chris, for the additional interesting insights into modern coin conservation. Yes, the MS70 was an unexpected delight. Upon examining the coin when it came back, I saw that the slight discoloration I feared would be disqualifying (so close, so far...) was in fact just a cosmetic blemish that was completely removed by the work NCS performed.

Cheers,

Beijim
