1955 Wheat w/Odd Rim

4 posts in this topic

Here is a 55 Penny that I came across. Could not find anything in a book or web. Is this like a grease filled die, cool to own, but nothing more.

The Rim of the penny is in 1-2 mm. The overall size is the same as a reg. penny.

Thanks for the info to a newbe.

No, the outer circumference of the coin (1-2mm) still has a slug appearance. Then the formed rim takes shape. The overall size is still the same as any other wheat. The formed rim is touching the top of all the letters in "In God We Trust" and "E Pluribus Unum"

What you are seeing is what is called at times a LDS (Late Die State). This means the die has been used for some time thus cuasing the devices such as letters etc. This is not too uncommon. Especially wtih older early American Type coins. This would just make for an interesting selling point, but not much added value. Thats my thoughts.
