Pictures coming along?

My new scanner inspired me to get out the camera and try again. I figured out that it has a minimum focus distance of about 4 inches. What do you think? I know the reverse of the 1875 Half is a bit blurry.

I think they are getting there and are perfectly acceptable to share with others. It appears that you are leaning the coins against your computer keyboard, which means you are probably holding the camera in-hand. Is this true? If you are, you may want to eventually buy an inexpensive tripod. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

You found me out Tom. The angle on the keyboard in relation to the light on the computer desk is perfect for photographing coins. I'll eventually buy a tripod, but this works just fine for me for now.

Yeah, but a tripod really isn't for me. I just want to point, click, and shoot. Not have to get out a bulky tripod and have a whole setup for taking pictures. I'd rather scan them than use a tripod.

It only takes 30 seconds to set one up.

Nice job Chad!

Tom is right a tripod is a must - I picked up a cheap one at

Wal-Mart for 15 bucks.

Good job Hays. thumbsup2.gif

There is no need to spend any more on a tripod if just for coin photography. confused-smiley-013.gif

Spending on equipment take money directly away from coin purchases. sumo.gif

I wouldn't call it bulky at all.

Sets up in seconds.

Ok ok I'll get one. Gosh! Now keep this thread on track. More comments/feedbacks/criticisms on my pics!

Oh da coins, 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

Color, brightness, and contrast are all good, but the focus leaves a lot of room for improvement.

It looks like you are using a single light; this is good to get the most contrast in the coins details, more lights can even out the brightness of the face of a coin, but it lowers the contrast and some detail can be lost.

So go get your tripod, you’re on the right track. thumbsup2.gif

Accurate pictures take quite a bit of effort, at least for me, especially with coins that are slabbed. Photography has become an important component of the hobby for me; it helps my studies and keeps me busy busy between purchases.

I'm with you on that. I'd still rather freehand my pictures. What kind of camera do you have and what are the settings? Does it have a macro mode? (macro.gif)

This is pretty much representative of what I get with my old 1.3MP Sony Mavica at around 4 inches. It's set for 1280 x 960 resolution and macro on. Neither of these pics are resized, just cropped.

The 3.2MP Nikon Coolpix is much clearer. It's resolution is set at 2048 x 1536 and macro is on.

893scratchchin-thumb.gif You should get better results with that camera than I do with mine. I was going to try and help you do that.

Laugh now, but I'm going to make mint off of it when I sell it to Braddick in 20 years. sumo.gifinsane.gif

P.S. I think it's VF.
