I just had a great coin shop experience!

Hi all,

I'm staying at my Uncle's this week in Newtown, PA. It's a small town, where everyone knows everyone. A few blocks from my Uncle's house is a little coin and stamps shop. I'm always looking for new coins for my Dansco 7070, so we stopped by. It was a cluttered small shop that sold a variety of collectibles. The little old lady that ran the shop was very nice and helpful, but she had a rather small inventory and was somewhat disorganized. I think she ran the shop more for a hobby than a business.

I ended up buying the last dime I needed, a 1832 bust dime in VF20 that (to me anyway) looks original, and it matches my seated dimes well. I also picked up a half of a nice 1976 UNC set to replace my crappy bicentennial moderns and my modern Jeff nickel, to complete the nickels except the no rays sheild nickel I want to replace. They all have a pleasent golden tone, except the dime and cent. I also cherry-picked a UNC 1955 wheat cent that happened to be a poor man's double die for my Dansco 7070.

She gave me a very nice discount on the coins too. The bust dime was $58, the UNC set was $6 and the 1955 cent was 25c. For no real reason, she knocked 10% off of the dime, and she gave me the penny free, so with tax I payed $61. Not bad!

Sorry for the long story, but I just wanted to let everyone know that there are still good dealers in the world who will rip people for a profit and cares more for other's enjoyment of the hobby.

I'll try to take a picture of the dime tonight to post it, but I don't have my usual camera or setup with me.

Here's my best attempts with my borrowed point and shoot camera and a table lamp. Now I feel bad for you guys with poor photo setups. frown.gif

The obverse is a dark grey color with a few detracting features, a scuff on the eyebrow and chest, and a small nick on her shoulder that looks like a black spot in the image. The reverse is the same color as the obverse but with a bluish tone when tilted and no destracting features. I'll see if I can play with my "setup" a bit more to get better pics.

Great pick-ups! I always like visiting the coin shops when I can. One learns just by looking at the various coins and talking with the dealer and other customers. I usually walk away with something after these visits. Glad you had a good experience today!

It's nice to be able to go into a shop where the owner lets you sit down and look through the coins for just the right pieces. There should be more places like this, but I'm afraid the advent of ebay has forever changed the landscape.

Thankfully, I have a coin shop near me like this. The owner is a very elderly fellow and lets me sit there, make decisions, find exactly what I like, then offer discounts to make me get out the door with less money than I came in. One of the cheapest shops around, with quality coins and friendly faces. I love that shop... cloud9.gif
