A pair of Beromunster 1/2 Taler

11 posts in this topic

Both of them were graded by NGC. The one of KM 4 is graded MS62 while the one of KM 5 is graded MS63 (I thought it should be prooflike). However, I don't know their current market value since I bought raw coins separately last year.

SWITZERLAND, Beromünster Abbey. similar to KM 4. NGC MS62

I really like the look of the MS63!

If you're interested in selling them, I'd be a buyer. I've got both these in AU condition, but wouldn't mind upgrading.

The value on these is all over the place. They were restruck for over a hundred years and your best bet on finding current value is to search auction records and try to match up the mint masters initials on your coin to others.

FYI, the one Krause calls rare is the one I encounter the most frequently.

You are right. According to Inwyler, both of them were struck around 1800. The engravers of the first one (Inwyler# 45) are Johann Meyer (Ioh. M.) [fl. 1810] and Hans Ulrich Brup[p]acher (HU. BP.) and the one of the second one (Inwyler# 49) is S. [sebastian?] [samuel? fl. 1810] Burger (S.B.F.) The design of KM#5 or similar is later than the one of KM#4 or similar. However, I don't think they are simple restrikes since each of edition is unique in design. It is Krause's mistake to combine them into just two editions (KM#4 and KM#5). I have collected images of more than 10 different editions of 1/2 Taler.

Nice coins, I think you gave Greg a woody.

Yea, verily. Too bad the engravers aren't around to work on new state quarters.

BTW, I've got a '34 wagon, and they call it a woody.

I will sell the MS62 on ebay tonight. Maybe I will sell the MS63 later. It depends on the result of the MS62. My main interests are medieval hanseatic towns coins (Lubeck, Hamburg, Riga, Dorpat, Reval, etc).

By the way, I'm a foreigner. What does "woody" mean? smile.gif
