Small estate coin set in Northern Virginia: What do I do with them?

4 posts in this topic

I have my father's coin collection -- and he was by no means a collector. He just hung onto some $5 gold pieces, a handful of buffalo-head nickels and quite a large number of Indian Head pennies and such. Nothing major in terms of a "collection," but perhaps some value to collectors. Some of the coins are quite old. I'm looking for a place in Northern Virginia or DC I can get an honest appraisal to sell. Where do I start?

Thanks,

JT

Howdy and welcome. You may want to start by either buying a copy of the Red Book at any national bookchain or going to your local library to borrow a copy. The book costs about $15, is easy to use and will give you valuable beginner information on how to determine the condition of a coin and its approximate value. You may also want to hang around these boards and read more, if you are in no particular hurry to sell.

Just from your introduction, the $5 gold pieces are worth $150 or more each. I should also stress never clean any of your coins in any way or you will lose a significant percentage of their value.

Try Julian Leidman - 940 Wayne Ave., Silver Spring, MD.

Don't forget that the big summer ANA convention is coming up soon. Either call him right away or at the end of the month.

If you can post some decent pictures of the ones that you think may be of some value, we would love to guess at their grade and value. That may give you a start.
