You really should get this coin certified by NGC or PCGS because it will help you immensely should you ever decide to sell it.

Looks like a pretty nice XF/AU Dahlonega $5 and the more common of the two varieties of one of the most common dates in the series. It does not look cleaned, but the glare from the plastic and the photographic techniques could play tricks. If it truly is an original (ie. uncleaned, undipped, unrecolored specimen), it is probably worth in the $2000-3000 range and would be considered desirable by those who specialize in southern gold.

I would also recommend getting it certified by NGC or PCGS.

Wow! What a gift. cloud9.gif

I also vote for certification and will reiterate what Tom and others have said - CLEAN NOTHING!!! (And don't sell them until you TRULY understand their value.)

For grading comps, here are some photos:

1845-D $5 PCGS VF-30 (older holder, might sneak into a 40 holder on a good day at NGC):

1854-D $5 PCGS XF-40 (typical weak strike):

1859-D $5 PCGS AU-50 (rattler holder, might 53/55 today):

No way Tommy's coin 55's, as suggested in the other thread.

SageRed, I don't have any experience with gold and can't hazzard a guess at the grade of Tommy's coin. Where do you see it?

Crummy pic, but I would guess XF-45.

Thanks for the opinion. I now see with your examples AU 55 is way too high. Thanks for thr education!
