I got these from my Aunt about 10 years ago. Can some one tell me if they are worth anything:

1) 1845 D $5 Gold

2) 1901 $5 Gold

3) 1911 $5 Gold - Indian Head - BLP Below Indian

4) 1881 $5 Gold

5) 1901 S $5 Gold

6) 1895 O $10 Gold

7) 1881 $10 Gold

8) 1908 $2 1/2 Gold

Thanks. These are in a cardboard sleeve with plastic covering them. How should I proctect them if they have any value.

Howdy and welcome. The first thing I can tell you is to never attempt to clean your coins in any manner or you will lose a significant percentage of their value. Having said that, there are substantial numbers of counterfeit gold coins out there, and they have been counterfeited for generations, but I will assume that these are real for the sake of education.

An image of the coins would help greatly since their value, if genuine, would be determined by their condition. Just going by the dates you have listed, the 1845-D is the most valuable piece there. Again, images would help much more than a simple list. If genuine, you are looking at thousands of dollars in coinage.

Thanks Tom. Wow! I will post some pics tomorrow.

I did not think they were worth much at all. Given that fact, I also received these:

1) 1935 S Silver Dollar

2) Hobo Nickel - Date worn off

3)1817 Large Cent

4)1860 O Half Dollar

5) 1921 Silver Dollar

6) 1927 Silver Dollar

7) 1934 S Silver Dollar

8) 1900 Silver Dollar

9) 1921 SIlver Dollar

10) 1922 Silver Dollar

11)1883 Silver Dollar

12) 1923 S Silver Dollar

Are these worth taking a pic of and posting?

Thanks again,

Bob

All I read was:

Received coins... 10 years ago... worth anything... cardboard sleeve... protect them...

I didn't read anything about an Aunt.

I've got a question for all of you gold guys that I'm curious about and might help our newcomer:

How can you tell if a gold coin is original and was not cleaned of dipped?

Thanks,

Zach

Zach,

Generally, for a cleaned or dipped coin, you're looking for "unnatural" color or signs of abrasion (such as hairlines or fine, parallel scratch marks).

It's usually very hard to tell from an image if a coin has been cleaned or dipped - you have to see it in person and rotate the coin under a light source.

OK, since Tom said this one is the most valuable one, I will lead off with the pics for this coin. Let me know what you all think.

How do I add a picture? Help.

I did that, I hit the browse button, find the file, the press Ok, Submit, then I get "The page can not be displayed error message." These are large files (1.2MB) is that the reason (5meg camera)?

This is a picture you will either need to resize in paint or photoshop. Or you could use a web hosting site like photobucket.com to host your pics then post the link by using the image button when you make a post..

Take this with a grain of salt and wait for the experts to chime in - but that looks pretty darn nice to me. Larger pictures would help to ensure that it isn't counterfeit and also help ballpark a grade. But again, it looks very nice to me thumbsup2.gif

Unfortunately, your images are way too small and dark for us to be able to tell you anything.

I agree and if it is real you do have something special here. Any D mint gold is nice.

hm...$5+$5+$5+$5+$5+$10+$10+$2.50 = $47.50.

Well, it pains me to do it, but I'll give you $50 for them.

at a first glance to me it looks real. Sorta lifeless, but real non the less. I am sure some of the gold guys will chime in with more info.

This coin still looks like it beats my entire collection but I am not familiar with the counterfeit variaties of the 1845 Dahlonega - It's not Denver (if you didn't know)

No I don't mind but I'm going to bed soon. I could do it tomarrow, if that's okay?

Others here will be familiar with this coin and speak towards it's authenticity. One thing to keep in mind though is that most fake gold coins are actually gold. It's unlikely that this coin is worthless. It looks authentic to me, but again, I'm not familiar with the counterfiet varieties and what to look for.
