How to place coins in an album....

....so as to not make sliders out of BU coins. I am checking out some older Wayte Raymond Albums and the plastic slides seem to rub against the album page.. maybe it would even rub against the coin! If that is the case I might not use the album and continue keeping coins in flips? How do you folks deal with the same? confused.gif Thanks a lot.

This is a fantastic question, and an issue I'd like to write a WYNTK post on. It's critical to press the coin as far into the hole as possible. In conjunction with this, you should plan to simply NEVER remove the backing slide, which the coin will be pressing up against. In fact, you might as well lock in the back slides with tape or something similar.

By pressing the coins in as far as possible, they will be recessed below the level of the obverse slide, and you'll be able to remove it as often as you like without a problem.

Of course, you want to press the coin in with something protective between your finger and the coin. I like to use HandiWrap, or some other inert plastic film. Other folks use cotton gloves.

I've never had a single coin acquire slide marks while in my possession.

James has given you excellent advice and it is also the method that I try to adhere to. However, I make certain that the coin is not only situated beneath the plane of the page on the obverse, but I also attempt to keep it a small bit away from contacting the reverse plastic sleeve, just in case the sleeve is somehow disturbed and moves at some point. I use camera lens quality tissue paper to carefully and evenly depress the coin into the slot. By the way, I do not use albums with MS or PF coins, but I do use them for F-EF coinage.

You guys pretty much have it covered. I might add one thing.

Each time you use the sleeve it rakes dust off on the coin.

This can be a real problem with MS and Proof coins.

I see it the same as Tom. Albums are great for F-EF coins. smile.gif

Yes, thanks for the reminder about dust.

One of any album collector's best friends is canned air. I would call it essential. Prior to replacing a slide, give a quick shot at each coin to get rid of any potential dust particles.

And of course, store your albums in an appropriate environment. I have mine stored with silica gel packets.

If this thread gets more responses, I will gladly condense the thread into a WYNTK article.

I keep my Kennedy Half and State Quarter Dansco albums in an birchwood dresser. They tone quite nicely after 4-5 years.
