There is no Reverse of 1939. The entire mintage of 1939-dated nickels is found with either the Reverse of 1938 or Reverse of 1940. These were different master hubs, and the dies sunk from them were used alternately during 1939. The Reverse of 1938 was flawed, with the steps of Monticello being indistinct and a bit wavy. This was corrected midway through 1939, and this revised hub is called the Reverse of 1940 simply to identify it as the type that continued 1940 onward.
