What happened to the obverse rim? It doesn't look like any error I've seen before.

It looks like it was filed down? But that just a guess... At either rate I am too curious about the luster on the coin. Still looks nice either way..

It appears it may have been removed from a "lucky penny" encasement, which accounts for the flattened obverse portion of the rim.

This looks like a potentially genuine mint error to me, not post-minting damage. I would definitely send this coin in to NGC for certification.
