A Crusty New Columbian Commemorative Half Dollar

11 posts in this topic

I won this in CommemDude's giveaway across the street. It's my first classic commemorative, and hopefully not my last. This one's going in the 7070.

Any ideas about the green gunk? PVC?

Thanks,

Zach

Is blue ribbon better than Acetone? I was going to get some acetone soon, because I have a few coins with some pvc.

Thanks,

Zach

To tell you the truth, I wouldn't do anything to that coin. If the spots are PVC, and it is a good chance they are, then their removal will likely leave underlying untoned areas that will scream to be looked at and will take away attention from the coin as a whole. Additionally, if they are PVC, it looks like the coin has a healthy, thick crust and I doubt they would get much, if any, worse over time. I would just leave it alone and chuck if in the album, it will look great! thumbsup2.gif

Hey Zach, I won the same giveaway and got my coin today. It's not as crusty as yours, but instead still very original with a nice rainbow tone around the profile of Columbus. Went great in my Dansco 7070.

Zack,

Congrats on your win! I just want to second TomB’s comments. Do not try to remove the PVC. In my opinion, the results will look worse for the effort.
