Repubblica Veneta (Revolutionary Issue) 1848 5L -- Opinions Please

From that small of an image, it is impossible to tell. WAG is that it's MS63ish. I can't see wear or any major marks, but the color is a little off - perhaps an old cleaning.

I've been looking for a NICE eaxmple of this and the lion on block variety. They just can't be found really nice - even in Italy.

I was hoping that you'd chime in because of your experience in looking for pieces with the Lion of St. Mark. Your comment on the difficulty is particularly helpful, and it agrees with my observations.

The color could be a problem with the photo -- I don't know. How does the color seem "off" compared with others that you've seen. Thanks.

It's hard to explain, but it just says "cleaned and naturally retoned" to me. Many of these I have encountered have been cleaned, so that's the first thing I usually notice.

I've been told by an Italian dealer that these are much cheaper in Italy than the US. You stll can't find them in gem condition, but they are much cheaper in lower grade unc.
