San Diego Coin Show Report

13 posts in this topic

Drove down to San Diego today with JamminJ to go to the coin show. It's the first time I've ever been to this show, so I wasn't sure what to expect.

Decent sized show with maybe 100 dealers. I can't gauge activity against previous shows, but it appeared that dealers were doing a decent amount of business, but it wasn't big dollar business.

Not exactly a lot of variety in what was in the cases. Lots of Morgans and collector coins. Quite a few raw coins - more so that I usually see at show. I noticed several dealers selling rolls of state quarters. I thought these were dead. Very little early stuff. Lots of post-civil war stuff in lower collector grades. Noticed quite a lot of slabbed modern (about 60% NGC & 40% PCGS). Much of it was priced VERY optimistically to put it nicely. Several gold Buffalos in the cases.

Met up with Mark Feld, RIP, at the show... Actually had a very nice long chat covering several topics. He was nice enough to take a look at several coins I had and give me his opinion. I believe he said "gorgeous" for several of them. It's always nice to hear a compliment on your coins from someone like Mark. While we have differences of opinions on many things relating to this hobby, it's always a pleasure to talk to him.

Met up with Woodwind for a few moments, but we were in a hurry and on our way out the door, so didn't have much time to chat.

I'm sure other forum members went to the show, but didn't see then, nor did we really have time to socialize.

On the way back we stopped by Pat Braddick's home. Very enjoyable chat and he was kind enough to show us many coins out of his collection. Some amazing coins that really make you just take a step back and a second look. I've said it before, but it bears repeating, I don't know anyone who appears to have more fun with coins that Pat. He is the model that a coin collector should be. Lots of fun, doesn't care what other people think, or what the grade is, and would just as easily add an oddball token to his collection as he would a choice original early type coin.

Overall a very enjoyable day.

Show grade: B+

Sounds like a good day, were you able to buy anything? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

Nothing for myself. Purchased a handful of foreign coins for resale, but nothing special.

Not much to add except my one and only not for resale coin (although there are a few I'm undecided about):

Always a pleasure visiting with Greg. He knows his coins and his opinion is valuable to me.

I'd have gone to the show and was fully expecting too but honestly, crossing a major overpass on my way to the post office first and seeing the southbound traffic on I-5 just discouraged me.

Nothing but brake lights as far as I could see. I guess between the Del Mar race track opening its racing season and the ComicCon going on at the San Diego Convention center coupled with people just out and about made the thought of driving on a congested freeway at painstakingly slow speeds, miserable.

I did get a chance though to visit a coin shop, and pick up an almost complete set (missing four coins), of neat Buffalo nickels (GD04 to FN12, average, but no cleaned or problem/acid treated dates). The bonus was a three-legged in the 1937-D spot. Its got some older damage but overall a sweet VF detailed coin. I imagine this set was collected straight from circulation at the time the album was printed. $220.00 for the complete lot- so not too shabby of a deal.

I didn't even spot the 3-legger until I arrived home and was checking to confirm all the coins matched up their respective spots in the old Library of Coins album.

Of course I had to brag a bit to Greg who showed the patience of Job as I'm sure coins like this generally aren't his thing.

Side note:

Now, you'de think as Mark Feld lives in LaJolla, just a hop skip and a jump from Encinitas we'de have met up once or twice, but not yet. Maybe another day.

It takes a certain type personality to slip in ..The bonus was a three-legged in the 1937-D spot. Its got some older damage but overall a sweet VF detailed coin......
