Question about Proof Mercury dimes / die rotation

5 posts in this topic

As many of you know, I'm assembling a complete run of proof singles from 1936 through 1969. I've managed to pick up four Mercs so far, but all four share one interesting characteristic. They all show identically rotated dies of approximately 15 degrees!

Can any other proud Proof Mercury dime owners out there please check to see if by chance yours show this same trait? For that matter, if anyone knows this to be a diagnostic characteristic of the issue, I'd be interested. So far, I have 1937, 1939, 1940 and 1942.

I just checked heratige, and a number of their proof mercs are rotated about fifteen degrees in either direction, but some are dead straight.

James, I have no idea if it was an issue, but I would

love to see some pictures.

I just checked my proof mercs. The 1942, 2 1941's, and a 1938 had no rotation

1940: 5 degree clockwise

1937: 10 degree clockwise

1939: 15 degree clockwise

1936: 15 degree counterclockwise
